Wet socks. Ewwww.

Sheep sent me recipes for making chocolate truffles and one "choco crispy cake". The former only need rather basic ingredients so I might try make some. If you happen to see me some time this week, don't be surprised to receive random chocolate from me. :D

*randomly tempts Liz with chocolate cake from cook book*

Erm, this is very random, but I'm curious. Could you guys please tell me what sorts of things you don't eat, for whatever reasons (dieting, allergy, religion, ew it's disgusting)? ([livejournal.com profile] lpatobe, I think [livejournal.com profile] tez_plush is curious about your culinary preferences, too.)

At some point this week I might need to pop to China Town to buy things to make "turnip cake" with, depending on whether I can actually be bothered. Could just go on Saturday and buy a ready-made one I guess, but those never taste as good.

[livejournal.com profile] giving_ground~ I totally forgot about the eye test thing. :D; oh well, it's good for a year anyway.

You mean you're not sick of my presence yet? Wow. XD;;; Mmm... chocolate... >_>

I don't eat... hmm... well, evidently I shouldn't eat gluten, but I do anyway. I don't eat tinned sweetcorn unless it's in something which is otherwise sufficiently wonderful to outweight the ewwwsweetcorn factor. (Corn on the cob is ok but not amazing.) In general I've become so much less picky about food in the last few years, though. The list of stuff I used to hate was so long. Right now I'm struggling to think of anything else. ^^ Oh, orange segments! Because I really like the taste but the texture of the skin is horrible.

XD! Yesssss, chocolate!

Oooh! I really like sweetcorn (both canned or on-the-cob)! Is it the taste or texture you don't like? Or is it that a certain yaoi video has put you off corn forever? XD

XD!!

The canned stuff tastes funny, but with the on-the-cob stuff it's just the... um... what would you call it. The outer layer of the little pieces is weird. The taste is fine.

The skin? Kind of like orange segments, now that I think about it... *sees a trend!*

Hmm... food. But here food = going into kitchen = OMG MUST TIDY = an hour later and still hungry. XD;;; *has been tidying it for a chunk of the morning anyway*

Mushrooms. Allergic. Uh, dark meat of any poultry. Ew. Cole Slaw...ew. I was pregrant when I worked at a restaurant that served it at every meal...and when it goes bad and I had to clean it...never again. Cake. I dislike most cakes. Frosting. EW. Too sugary. Well, not butter cream frosting, but cake frosting is a general ewwwww. Any organ meats, haggis, entrails, shit like that. But, uh, I also dislike goat cheese. Not feta cheese, but the shit my mum likes that has an aftertaste of mouldy socks.

I don't know how they generally make cake in the US, but we can get lots of different (and lighter) ones here... coleslaw I like (but wouldn't like to find out what it's like when it's gone off D:)

Am not much of an organ meats person, as well! But I can eat most of them if asked to.

It's a shame about the mushrooms... they're really nice~

Turnip cake? o.0

I don't eat tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, okra, anything with an exoskeleton, squid, octopus, mysterious sea creatures, lamb, and strange cheeses. And mangos. And coffee.

Yeah, it's a food mostly eaten at Chinese New Year (although we do eat it all year round these days). It's not a dessert although it's called cake. It's made with Chinese white radish (or use turnips), rice flour, chinese mushrooms, Chinese sausage (it's a sort of preserved sausage), grilled pork and other things. It's made in a rounded tin and steamed. Can also pan-fry it after it's steamed, depending on how you like it. *loves the stuff*

That's quite a list! O_O *eats all those XD;* It makes eating-out quite difficult?

Date: 2007-02-12 01:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reposoir.livejournal.com
Ah, I see.

The Chinese sausages, are they the bright red ones I am thinking of?

No, not really a problem ever eating out. Unless I went to a scallop restaurant. Then I'd be screwed. ;)

From: [identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com
Yeah. There are two kinds though. One is more waxy and made with meat and fat and whatever they put in, the other one is..... well, IMO weird. And made with innards. And I can't stand the texture. DX For both, though, I think it's not unusual if some people (mostly "foreigners") can't stand them.

XD!

Ohoh and to the food thing, I really REALLY dont like spicy food, at all. Even something only slightly spicy, if it tingles I can't eat it. It's not a medical problem or anything I just dont like my food to feel like fire.

*woes at not being able to access youtube from work* no, haven't heard of it... will watch it at home~

:O! I used to not like spicy at all (although can eat it okay), but now it sort of depends on mood... sometimes I'd eat one of those ultra-spicy Korean instant noodles. XD; I know what you mean, though! Don't like spicy in most foods (don't even like adding black pepper).

Oh well, at least spicy foods are easy to avoid :D

I generally don't eat seafood but sometimes I eat fish, shrimp, and lobsters. >_> Okay I just don't eat crab because I hate hate hate the aftertaste. XD; There's a story behind this. So we vacation to Florida a lot because we're pretty close and one time we caught crabs on the beach during the night. Mom made a whole bunch (they're pretty big too; not blue crabs) and used Chinese dipping sauce with garlic and Chinese onions. That was the time that put me off crabs forever. DDD: Ugh I think it might be the sauce more than the crab but crab is really annoying to eat anyway so I hate eating it.

Dislike frosting unless it's ice cream lol. Couldn't eat chocolate for awhile because had it once at like 1am and it was so gross. I don't like most cheese unless it's swiss, cheddar, or american, the ones with relatively no taste. I don't really like milk but it's more standable if it's not boiled (my parents made it boiled for so long x____x and then I discovered milk is so good if it's cold and eaten with cereal, only). >_>;

Organs, etc. I like cole slaw but never found a cole slaw from a place better than KFC's. lmao which is really sad.

#1 thing I don't like: ONIONS (white and Chinese; though Chinese is a bit better). ughughguhg I hate the aftertaste. X_X

Ohbutbut, crab is so nice ;_; It probably really is the sauce, because crab is so nice ;_; And it's not really a hassle to eat, just sort of have to know how to do it... (though I do make a mess still, whenever I eat crab...)

XD! I've never had heated milk (or think it could be heated) until I left HK... I really don't think milk is supposed to be boiled anyway O_o just simmered until it's hot enough?

:O!!! *likes onions (cooked only)* How about like, caramelised onions?

Crab is too annoying for me to eat. XD;;;;;; Lobster is much better *_* The Chinese style of making it: ginger and onion I think??? is really good XD

I don't know if they boil it or if they just heat it. I just know the taste changes. Also that type of milk eaten with boiled egg gives off a really really strange combo of taste. o____O;;;

I don't think I've ever tried that type of onion. XD; If it's unnoticeable, I don't make a fuss about it but for sandwiches and stuff I don't put onions in it. I just don't eat it if it's in stirfry.

Date: 2007-02-12 02:06 pm (UTC)

Lobster is always good *_* Never had a bad kind of lobster before~ *likes the Chinese style, the cheesy style, and OMG LOBSTER SASHIMI IS HEAVEN*

Heated milk and boiled egg..... EWWWWWW.

It's like, onion with whatever's added to it and cooked so much that it's really really soft and kinda sweet. My sister picks out the spring onion in stirfry, just like you. 8D But I just take them all from her because I really like it. XD;;;;

I don't eat food with tentacles and/or suckers on it. >_>; Spawn of the Great Cthulhu was never meant for human consumption! Salt, boiled cod is another ewwwwww for me, I was overdosed on the stuff growing up. A lot of fish is ew in general because of the bones. I see fish bones and I am instantly Not Interested. Lutefisk (dried fish soaked in lye - I KID YOU NOT!!!) is another Norwegian specialty I'm not touching. Runny eggs = ew; they must be hard boiled or fried over-hard style. Bitter stuff in general.

Just looked up lutefisk in wikipedia. It seems.... special. I'd give it a go though, if I ever come across it......

:O! It's just the egg yoke, right? How about things made with raw egg whites... tiramisu, for example? *would never miss out on any tiramisuing chance!*

Lutefisk can be anything from shivery jelly goop to rather more fish-like. XD There's a whole ritual to eating it.

I had no idea raw whites went into tiramisu! I love the stuff! So yes, it's just the yoke (though I wouldn't eat runny white, either). On bad days, I can get nauseated just from looking at someone eating a sunny-side-up egg or a soft boiled egg. ;;

Date: 2007-02-12 02:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com
Actually, quite often raw egg yokes are used too, depending on the recipe/the place you get the tiramisu from! XD I think the more traditional recipes use raw yokes, but recently more people start to cook the yokes as part of the process because of health worries etc.

Oh, and I forgot mussles, the smell alone makes me ill. :( Seafood in general, except for shrip and fish, aren't my thing. I've never tried oysters but I think I wouldn't like them much, either.

Also, I just canot eat innards, I think it's the texture that gets to me.

Brussel sprouts. Anything that was once the internal organs of an animal (sweetbread, ew. Tripe, ew. Head cheese, SO MUCH EW. Liver...I might try under duress.) Also tongue. Not ever going to pass through my lips.

Liver is icky x_x I must confess I kinda like tripe when cooked Chinese-style... and tongue isn't bad, but yeah, internal organs in general....... meep.

Brussel sprouts! I hated them too~ but that was back when I only ever had the school-cooked ones. A few years ago I ate some that were cooked from fresh and it was quite nice (as long as there was enough gravy to go with it XD)

Am vegetarian so don't eat meat or fish but do eat dairy products including free range eggs. No religious principles or ick factors at work - I went veggie for reasons of cost and practicality and stayed that way because of concerns about intensive animal farming practices. I compromised on dairy produtcts because I never found a vegan diet which didn't rely on taking vitamin supplements and I think soya milk tastes vile.

[livejournal.com profile] lpatobe will no doubt post his own reply later, when he's recovered from the nasty shock of realising that he didn't post something Very Important this weekend. Apparently it's all my fault for spending too much time watching certain Taiwanese dramas...

*can't imagine not eating meat ever again!* The only sort of soya milk that's nice afaik is sweetened soya milk. I've only ever made it with yellow rock sugar I got from Chinese places, though... and erm actually got the soya milk out from the beans myself, too (why do I keep going back to Chinese food in my replies?). It's not difficult to do but can get messy.

Awww. I'm sure Tez would still be happy even if it's late.

I'm vegetarian, so no meat or fish, and I try to minimise dairy because I'm mildly allergic. Same for wheat.

I'm very allergic to mushrooms (and quorn) and redkidney/aduki beans.

It's a shame, because I love cheese, bread and mushrooms. But there you go!

Date: 2007-02-12 04:39 pm (UTC)

Does that make things very difficult when you have to eat out? It seems like a lot of hard work even when shopping for food... a lot of processed food or snacks have eat and some form of dairy, right?

Date: 2007-02-12 04:55 pm (UTC)
scribblemoose: image of moose with pen and paper (Default)
From: [personal profile] scribblemoose
Yes, it does - I'm trying to avoid processed foods at the moment, but it's not easy. Fortunately I'm not totally allergic to wheat; so while I have to be careful with bread, and I usually eat rice-based pasta, I can have the occasional pizza or whatever and get away with it. If I know I'm eating out I'll be extra careful the rest of that week.

Ironically enough the processed veggie food that doesn't have wheat in tends to be Quorn. ;_;

Tesco do a reasonable 'free from' range, though. And I quite like cooking so we have lots of stir-fries, home-made bakes and things. And chips are fine. ♥

Mushrooms are the biggest problem for both ready-made food and eating out, though - they're in everything: pretty much any veggie lasagne, bake or even nut roasts have them in, and I can't tolerate them at all. :(

Date: 2007-02-12 07:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com
*nod* Quorn is made of fungus/mushrooms. It must be difficult.

This is very interesting for me - as far as I know, Chinese people usually don't suffer from food allergies. When someone doesn't eat something, it's almost always a lifestyle choice. It's only after I started living here that I realise how food allergies can affect people. Now, when I eat with someone for the first time, I try to remember to ask whether they have something they don't eat. I don't think a lot of my Chinese friends here do that.

Just out of curiosity (it's okay if you don't tell me)... what'd happen if you ate mushrooms by accident?

Can't stand anything spicy at all, uh. If it's too minty, too. Can't stand onion, cilantro, most seasonings, etc. 'cause I bite into them and just... too strong. Sweet and salt, I'm pretty good at standing, I'll eat straight salt but I can't stand sugar cane. Anything with too much cream makes me sick? Uh, and just in general, I don't eat condiments, or whatever toppings you might put on a salad or sandwich. (No dressing, yah. 8D; ) Most mushrooms, and eggplant, and sea cucumber, I don't like 'cause of texture.

Oddly enough, I'll eat stuff like tongue and liver and tripe without blinking. xD; As long as it's plain.
