More comments than ever for the Rikkai doujinshi post yesterday because I asked for it. I had to ask for it! 1 in 3 viewings resulted in a comment. XD; sharpie~ I have an idea! Every month, throw people off devil_mode if they haven't commented even once during that period. And ban them from joining again. It'll give me lots of satisfaction. \XD/ (see discussion in comments!)

A quick word count revealed that I've written 64k words so far this year. In the beginning of 2008 I was aiming to reach 100k this year, like I did in 2007, but it looks like I won't reach the target. Though, I'm not too disappointed with the word count because I wrote quite a few stories I like. :3

I think that would leave a sour taste in any person's mouth, because you had to practically ask for thanks when it should be automatic.

Hmmmm. I think you should maybe consider banning as a last resort. (Or use it to threaten >D) I have found some people who have added my comm to have advertised and linked it on other websites across the net and have linked particular doujinshi titles. And then I see a horde of people add me and I get no comments. I used to have the approved membership option on just so I could see the types of people who were adding me, but then I just got annoyed with constantly approving memberships. But these particular users who advertise you elsewhere, attract type of people who just want to download everything off you but not leave a word of thanks. Even the people who advertise don't say thank you! Or even ask you "can I link you on 'this' site? etc." I think I'm gonna go back to approving memberships and see how that goes but I will tell them that if they hotlink and I find who they are they will be banned pronto.

*sighs* Anyways, good luck with it I can only support you because you are doing a great job. People suck in their thousands, what can you do? :/

All in all, I just don't want what happened to Leah to happen to me - people getting lazier and lazier, and eventually assume that doujinshi just appear by magic and are not scanned by someone who had to spend her own time and money, and then ignore my feelings and go share my stuff without permission or even claim it as their own work.

The other day, while looking for Tactics doujinshi, I found the LJ of someone who spent a year looking for a very rare doujinshi by the original mangaka, finally bought it for well over $200, scanlated it with friends, posted it under friends lock - and the next day, IT WAS ALL OVER THE INTERNET, WITH THE CREDIT PAGE REMOVED. Oh my God.

Anyway, banning is a last resort, yes. I'm trying to find an alternative, maybe a poll at the end of every post. People love voting. People not on my friends list or haven't said anything for years would vote on my polls. Every time. orz

If I click, I comment, but I dun always have time. I'm a scanlator, so you know I feel your pain. I mean...we get maybe a handful of comments on our site for every release? But, I also don't do it for the comments. I do it cause I enjoy it. I wouldn't otherwise. Personally, I'd rather share my scans amongst friend friends and not just my flist. When I upload music? I can track how many downloads and no one ever comments. I mean...really. Not one person.

Same here about commenting. I try to share out to everyone who wants it because especially with PoT fandom, there are quite a lot of people leaving for other shinier things and I really want to help keep it going. But then people just make me want to hit them, sometimes.

I'd second what http://firescribble.livejournal.com/ said - sometimes I open up the doujinshi, see that the plot is quite complicated for me to grasp at first sight and i am either tired or dont have enough time to look thoroughly through it, or the drawing style happens to be not exactly to my liking, so i dont say anything. At the same time I can very well see how frustrating it is for people who put their heart and effort (and money, hey) into such communities to see the readers taking their work for granted. And I totally cant understand the way some people brain works when they share stuff that was specifically requested to be used privately. This is really appalling.
So i guess the idea with the poll is very good (especially with "Pez is God" option)))))

It's really hard to find a way to keep all sides happy! It's bad enough with writing fanfic, but at least it's a hobby that I'd carry on even if nobody reads it, so it doesn't matter to me (at least not too badly) if people don't comment. With scans, it's my way to hopefully help maintain people's interest in PoT, introduce them to the pairings I like, and find people to squee with, etc etc. Because I don't want to be the last person left in the fandom, what with everyone moving on to other series these days.

The poll thing will be a compromise since people will get even lazier with comments then, and I've been hoping to make new friends through the comm... but it's still better than nothing, I suppose. Will try to find some way to make it work...

hmm, actually, yes. can't but agree. (I apologize for lack of comment-formatting skills, its really 10th or so comment in my life =)))

I cant say for everyone of course but commenting seems even harder for me when it comes to fics. I don't know. I guess I am just a retard, because most of the time after reading a fic I am either "ohmygodthisissototallygreatsupercool" or "oh well. not my cup of tea". And I dont know what to say on both occasions because I can hardly provide any meaningful comment to support my opinion. But I guess that my personal problem and is a lame excuse because this is the way fandoms die.

I am so sorry for never saying a "thank you" on Todokanai comm. I will try to learn from it. Without enthusiasm of people like you, guys, what would a fandom be like?

With fics, it really does depend on the author. Most of the authors I know, including me, would welcome comments that simply say "I liked it". There might be some who prefer meaningful/long comments, but I don't know of anybody who actually dislike short ones. :)

On comments -- the only experience I have with this is a fandom community where the mods tried to impose a rule where everybody had to comment on at least two fics a month, or they'd be removed. It didn't work -- everybody just got resentful. :/ I hope you find a solution that works, because it's awful the way some people spend so much time doing something nice for fandom, only to be abused for it.

if only there was a way to disable right-clicking images, and if they'd bother to hack through... well, you know, where location^^;;... they'd have their IP address recorded in the uploader's server so there won't be a next time for stealers...

Sadly the only right-click disabling that can be done only works in IE (as far as I'm aware, I know it doesn't work in Firefox), and even IE users can get around it. orz.

I'm down with kicking people off, at least. I know sometimes people haven't even actually *looked* at anything in a month due to lack of time (when Leah was posting hers, I rarely got to them until a month or so after they were posted, myself.), so I'm not entirely sure about the banning thing (though you're more than welcome to ban empty journals, imo :3) The main reason I moved my stuff over to devil_mode to begin with was so I didn't have to deal with friending/defriending a bunch a people.

But yeah. Not commenting is just fucking retarded. If you looked at the book, comment. Say thank you. Say you didn't like the story/art. Say you didn't read it but you're mem'ing it to read later. If you can take the 5 seconds to click a link, you can take the 5 seconds to type two words and click a button.
