This is what I don't understand: why do people make their sharing journals as PERSONAL journals rather than communities?

This doesn't matter, of course, if the LJ is open. I can use the track function to find out when there is an update, or just pop-over every now and then to check. But if it's "comment here and I'll add you so that you can see scans", then I have a problem.

With [livejournal.com profile] todokanai, I don't mind at all, because I know who owns it and that person is on my flist anyway. But I don't want to have to add a LJ of a random person to my flist just to see scans - the person with that login can see my flocked entries! Why couldn't those people make sharing communities instead, and then giving posting permission to only the comm owner? And then posts can be viewable by members only. They could even set it to "membership requires approval" if they like.

Maybe I'll make a journal, post a few fake entries with it, use it to join some random fandom comms, then use it to friend those LJs. Hmph.

Yeah... I mind less because I probably only have about three or four entries which are just friendslocked. Almost everything else is public or on a filter (which includes very nearly all of my flist anyway, but cuts out two or three people. Mostly ones who know my ex. XD; ) so I just don't add journals for this stuff to the default posting filter. But in principle, it still annoys me. I'd far rather they were set up as comms.

Word. I don't use filters anymore, so I don't friend flocked scan/icon/whatever journals. I've no idea why people don't make communities instead, none at all.

I think most people don't bother to think "Hmm, maybe I should create a community." and just do the easiest thing at hand.

I wonder sometimes if they're just friend-collecting. You know, the myspace/facebook 'mine's bigger than yours' thing?

What other people said. But I also think that some people don't understand the difference between users and communities.

I have no idea how it goes for other people (I actually sort of wish todokanai was a community, not a personal LJ, but ... long story. X3 I made it years ago, and my scans were always NOT flocked. By the time people started stealing crap from me and I had to lock them... >_> There were too many posts for me to want to move everything to a community.) D: So I do not know if this happens for anyone else, but that is why [livejournal.com profile] todokanai is a personal eljay. Also in communities you cannot private posts, and I dislike that. >|

I used to post everything actually on the comms, and not in a locked lj at all, and people stole so much of it and hotlinked that I got sick of it :(

Oh, and:

Maybe I'll make a journal, post a few fake entries with it, use it to join some random fandom comms, then use it to friend those LJs. Hmph.

Quite a few people do that anyway, actually. :x

If these people were wanting to lock their doujinshi journal or scan community or something, I understand that. But I see a lot of people using their personal journal to post the occasional scan and those are the ones that irritate me when I see them crossposting hither and yon with 'add me to see my scans!!!' I don't think so. I don't want to have to sit through some tard's blathering just to occasionally get a glimpse of Sanada's ass.

I understand your reasoning, I really do. I hate filters and don't like sharing my personal thoughts, etc. with people who are only there for the fic. But I don't have time to create a new journal or a ficsite. So, oh well. :D

Yeah, the only thing I post over there is scans. I would never subject people to all my tardblathering just to see Sanada's ass.

Even if it is a very photogenic ass.

I actually wish I could just leave everything unlocked, it's so much fucking easier. But tardbags go and ruin it. >|

Plus it was sort of an accidental thing to end up being a doujinshi archive, and EVERYONE SHOULD LOVE ME ANWYAY >| so tough cookies. :D

It really is a very photogenic ass. :O I bet he has big thighs. Okay, I'm veering off topic and into hornytime.

I know exactly what you mean. I hate having to be nice when I really want to talk about so-and-so's big dumb stupidness and can't because she watches my journal and why oh why didn't I separate them long ago???

Oh, well. It's not nice to talk behind someone's back anyway so it's probably for the best that I don't. Though that might be why so many people want to set me on fire.

I LOVE YOU LEAHFACE.

Sometimes in my doujin eljay I like to make announcements or comments relating to the posting of doujin or such, but after the validity of the post is over with, it just takes up crappy space. I hate deleting anything, and so I private the posts. IE hiatus messages, polls, questions about posting stuff, or when I asked for help with getting people to stop hotlinking. :x

I am weird okay ;_;

P.S. I am scanning doujinshi of Bedsick!Yukimura macking on hawt nurses. Pervert.

I have never understood people that advertise new scans and then link to a locked entry and then you see on their post the lil 'teehee it leads to my locked journal. Friend to get the scans.' I mean, I joined one main comm already to get to fic, songs, info, scans, art etc. How many more do people expect me to join?

The reason there are comms is so that everyone doesn't have to have 1000 people friended and can instead just join one main comm and still receive the contributions and share things with those 1000 people all at once.

To me it looks like friend padding and selfishness. Like the whole 'I don't feel I'm being praised enough so I'm going to make them show me that I'm important and they'll have to friend me for things and grovel before my feet' type vibes.

I understand people have private sharing ljs or comms but as long as they aren't rigging fake links to locked entries on the main comm I'm fine with it. But when they do what that girl did on the tenipuri comm it bugs me.

And I ranted but it's a topic that bothers me since I see more people leaning towards this and I just feel that these tactics do nothing but hurt fandom.

edit: I also want to know whatever happened to people posting directly to comms. It seems like more and more people link off to their own lj for downloads, fics, art etc. I miss the days where people posted directly to the comm.

And I also wonder why more people don't question those who think it's okay to post on a comm to locked personal entries. It bothers me when fandom lets people get away with things that bug so many people.

I've been doing that lately on Tenipuri, mostly for people linking locked fanfic. It's rude, imo, to link to locked entries on public communities.'

Like you, I miss the days of scans being available on the communities, not special scan-only/whatever locked journals. Why not post a locked comm entry if they're worried about things?

Date: 2008-01-12 04:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fic-faery.livejournal.com
I did that to offcourt's latest dj post on tenipuri. I don't think my message got across and I even tried to be civil and reasonable... I may have just come across as a bitch though. >.> Whoops.

I definitely don't get the need to link to locked fanfic. Just repost on the comm if you don't want it public in your lj. Or make a fic lj. Alright, I understand people want to keep all their comments together or not lose their fic in a comm but that's what the handy memory feature is for. They'll get more audience if people don't have to jump through hoops.

Yeah... I don't really get it. I don't care if people have their dj sharing ljs especially if they're sharing for more than one fandom like otakupink does but to then post links on a comm back to a locked entry is just not cool.

I don't think there should be exceptions made for this journal or that for having locked scans, because, well, everyone has their own reasons and that's fine. Not my business why.

That said, it is irritating when people link locked entries and that's, imo, rude. So, fine if they're locked, just don't link to locked entries is all and maybe have a week a year amnesty of "advertizing" their scans, then go back to merrily posting to flocked entries.

My reasons for locking my scan journal are essentially the same as Leah's, not to mention how ban-happy LJ has been getting for ON NOES PORN. That, and hotlink protection doesn't work if it's a community (you have to allow *all* communities since it won't let you do say "community.livejournal.com/blahblahblah". If you can change make it work otherwise, I dunno how.).

...I hear Akaya prowling.

Actually, Nori boo, you can specify the directory. .^^ That's what I do for my img hosting.

Use this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?community.livejournal.com/commname(/)?.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png)$ - [F,NC]

Replace "commname," of course.

You can do this, but I always find that there are a whole bunch of people who seem to have problems with it, and by problems I mean they end up being not able to see any images, even though they should be able to.

It ended up being too much of a horrible hassle for me to try fiddling with scripts every other day.

Yeah, I don't like having to friend someone for things for a variety of reasons. They can see flocked entries and they may not be people I get along with, so it'd give the wrong impression to have them on my flist.

>_> Because I'm a bad person who sometimes checks someone's flist first before friending.
