*is comp illiterate*
Oct. 12th, 2006 09:56 pmYou know how Windows have a pop up balloon to warn you when you're low in disk space?
If, say, I've set my comp's virtual memory to 2GB. And I download stuff over the night. Maybe, after the downloading, I've got less than 2GB space left. It's not enough for Windows to warn me of anything. But, if the comp isn't really doing anything in particular, it shouldn't be using the virtual memory, which means that it shouldn't suddenly start going weird, takes 10 minutes to boot, and stuff like that...
...or would it????
Because I've moved/burned a lot of files and now it seems like it's running fine =/
But I don't know how much space I had left this morning.
WTF *headdesk*

Date: 2006-10-12 09:32 pm (UTC)The virtual memory is not the same as the space in disk, virtual memory is how much of the physical space the computer will use to store "temporary knowledge" (ie, temp files for a program). If you leave the comp downloading overnight, that eats up physical space. The computer won't whine at you because technically you have enough space to run other things, but, when you open another program it starts using the Virtual Memory, which takes up some more physical space and you end up with a stuffed computer.
If the problems have stopped after you moved stuff around, it's most likely that that was the problem, you were low on disk space. Do you know how much free space your ocmp has right now?

Date: 2006-10-12 09:35 pm (UTC)I've moved around a lot of stuff, now there's around 35GB left. Before that, the last time I checked I had about 4GB, I remember downloading prolly 5 episodes of anime since then, but there could've been more... XD;

Date: 2006-10-12 09:40 pm (UTC)4GBs is not healthy for windows to run, at all. I've had it at 2GBs and feared for my computer all the time. XD;
That was definitely the problem, then! Yay for not having to format.
