TV drama "House" being sued... (link from [livejournal.com profile] chinawolf)

In Cantonese slang, we say people like this "have itchy anuses and nothing to do". I doubt the person who launched the complaint actually meant it - it's just something to get attention and money. Perhaps envy of other people's success.

Recently in HK (it's ongoing news), a young woman Yan-Yi (she's around 17, I guess) became the spokesperson of a slimming agency. She's the daughter of a well-respected comedian in HK, who is obese but very popular. The daughter was also obese but has successfully lost a lot of weight and become, IMO, quite attractive. She isn't slim-slim now, not the model-type, but you can see she is a pretty girl. She was pretty to start with, anyway. (This is an old pic of her. This and this are recent pictures.)

Recently Yan-Yi took part in a children's music show on TV and in a sketch, she had to kiss another young actor on the cheek. She didn't even kiss him - they did it with camera angles. Guess what - somebody filed a complaint saying that the scene was "disturbing, disgusting and degrading to the male population". Yes. After that got into the news, other people followed suit and the equivalent of OFTEL in HK received over 300 complaints. Why? People just think it's funny to make fun of her, because she was once a fat person. What they say is, "once a pork chop, always a pork chop". (pork chop being the insulting way the HK people address fat women)

Just a few days ago, the new Disneyland in HK was opened to tourists. Yan-Yi was invited to be a guest (despite the complaints - kudos to Disney). In the parade, she was dressed up as one of the princesses. And yes, those people are at it again - once again saying this "destroyed children's fantasies" and so on. One of the trashy magazines (your equivalent of HEAT) went as far as having her "princess" look in the centre-fold, with the rings of a dart-board superimposed on the image, so that people can throw things at her.

Of course, the entertainment industry is being very supportive for her and all condemned the actions of that selected group of people. Probably 300 people are making fun and what, a couple thousands are laughing along? Some of the media is even fuelling the madness. Her mum said she's worried this will change Yan-Yi's view on society - well dammit, she's right. WTF is wrong with this world?

News spread fast and everybody's posting to the [livejournal.com profile] pot_secrets comm, so the overall quality is declining. I think it's time to enforce a lj-cut rule there - with so many entries everyday it's not practical to have it on friends list unless things are under lj-cuts. Ah well.

I now have 2 versions of this icon. I foresee more coming in the future :D

I was surprised when I was in Japan that nobody said anything (as far as I could tell). I'm not built like a sumo wrestler, but I'm definitely larger than most of the Japanese. I'm so used to being part of the norm in the US. It's not until I go to the other side of the world that I really feel way too big.

I won't let the weight thing keep me home. I've lost a nice amount of weight this year, and hope to lose a little more before going to China. It won't be enough, but at least I know I'm doing my best. ^_^
