I think it depends on how many players there are. If we have one Zaoldyeck, one Spider, two of the core four and Hisoka (who by definition isn't affiliated with any group), it's going to be difficult. If there are enough players, it's possible not to have direct journal interaction between conflicting groups without crippling the game.
Also, no one in their right mind would post about sensitive subjects, even under lock. You never know who has the nen ability to deactivate any computer security system whenever they do a handstand.

On the other hand, there is another possibility, which is built into the world of HxH and which works kind of like the journals, only with voice messages.

As for AUs, well. To take PoT examples, there is Fusion!AU (a slight or huge twist in the original scenario), PostTenipuri!AU (a few years into the future, without changing history but making assumptions as to what has happened in the middle) and Vampy!AU (changing everything except character names and possibly appearances). While I'm ok with the first two, the last one makes no sense to me. (just to state clearly my position on the subject once and for all)

Zen ability is going to make any type of journal a little hard to keep. Not only is there Drae's example, but what if someone can determine if the write actually meant what they said at the time of writing by crossing his arms and nodding to initiate his zen?

Still, a lot of fun could be had.

Like you said Yuki, the world of HxH is that vast an AU isn't really needed. Put it after the last OVA maybe. Make the storyline continue and have the spiders seeking to find Kurapica and friends at all costs. Have them doing that whilst Kuroro is still seeking the way to break his confinement. Of course I dont follow the manga, so maybe it's already been covered.

If you wanted to, there could even be a jailbreak from that tower where they did the hunter exam, and that psycho doctor could prey on them again... Just an idea. That's not AU, that's just a possible twist on their universe. Alternate timeline, not universe.

You could just give it a basic loose premise and let the players develop their characters within it like in Fusion. Give it a twist and let people develop the character the way they feel it would have reacted to such circumstances. But they're all very vague ideas, sorry...

There are lots of possibilities, maybe a brainstorming chat might be an idea?

The way for Kuroro to get back to his own self has been covered in the OVAs, even if we haven't openly seen the nen being removed. If alternate timeline there must be, and I think it's the case because the manga is in the middle of an arc centering on the two monster brats to the exclusion of about everyone else, I'm all in favour of fast-forwarding one or two years.

I suppose we can ask generally, would you like a major character (that being the Gon-gang, the Spiders, and other such as Killua's family, Senritsu, etc) or a "less popular" one (anybody from the hunter exam, Greed Island, etc). If someone wants a less popular one we'll need to try to work it in. The major ones we must account for anyway.

Bad translation. I've been rewatching the Killua vs Illumi hunter exam episode...

What should be "I admit defeat, Illumi." becomes "I admit defeat, brother."

What should be "He's my friend." becomes "He's my best friend."

If they get such obvious things wrong, I wonder about the more complicated stuff...

Usually manga is nicer than anime (the only exception I can think of is Shoujo Kakumei Utena XD). But anime has a different sort of entertainment value ^^
