The way Yukimura inspected the eggplant as if inspecting his army made Tezuka want to snicker. Today he was feeling good, even conversational. "Is that so. I would rather not be compared with an eggplant; once eaten, there is no more." He glanced at the rows of vegetables, all lined up and waiting to be selected. "We eat vegetables at their prime. But people go on." People grow old, and die. But Tezuka wasn't going to ruin the mood like that.

"Do you know anything about growing vegetables?" He asked, changing the topic as they moved along and examined the imported bell peppers.

The vampire tilted his head, looking up the slight distance between his eyes and Tezuka's. "You do look nice in purple, but...point taken. People do indeed go on." And they were far tastier, Yukimura added to himself, the curve of his mouth indicating continued amusement.

"Mm. It's a hobby I've cultivated over the years," he replied straight-faced, "first when it was necessary for survival and second when I was young in my new life. It gave me a sense of connection to things alive," he added with a smile, Tezuka's face reflecting in the plain-lensed glasses Yukimura wore.

Slender fingers wavered over the stack, a honeybee debating which flower to alight upon, before taking a large green pepper and placing it in both of Tezuka's hands. "These should be firm to the touch and uniformally colored."

The weight of the pepper diverted Tezuka's thoughts from imagining Yukimura as a human. He ran his thumb over the waxy surface of the vegetable, and turned it over in his hands, as if deep in thought. Then he replaced the green pepper and took a red one in his hand, and held it in front of Yukimura. "I prefer these." He flashed a rare smile before putting it into the basket, and leaned down to pick several more. He liked the other colour ones because they were sweet. Apparently human naturally like sweet foods because the taste indicates the food is nutritious. Pretty much the same reason why vampires prefer feeders over ordinary humans.

"Maybe we can go for a countryside break." Tezuka took the basket from Yukimura's hand. Not that he thought Yukimura would get tired, it was just... something friends do. "With Fuji," because it seemed the clan leader's second could always do with some relaxing tme, "and the young one..." He trailed off, having forgetten the name. "The one with curly hair, and sings beautifully."

Tezuka was so achingly beautiful when he smiled, devoid of the heavy weight that lingered often in his eyes, that it made the vampire pause, simply absorbed for a moment in experiencing him. "I'll remember that," Yukimura said at last, taking a pen and a small pad from inside his jacket and jotting down a note. The list of Tezuka's favorite foods--he kept one for all his feeders--was growing, slowly.

The pen halted, the scientific name only halfway written, as Tezuka deftly lifted the shopping basket in exchange for a soft suggestion. Going away? Syusuke and Kunimitsu and Hajime and himself? Someplace warm and fragrant with rich, dark earth and a garden and lazy days spent doing nothing but feeding and lovemaking? Lying in the cool shade of an ancient tree with cool dirt against his skin and drowning in Syusuke's eyes?

"Yes," Yukimura whispered, the mental image overwhelming in its power, deep and passionate, the longtime love between them nearly tangible on his lips. "Ah..Mizuki," he added after another long moment, smiling again. "I think that would be lovely. Just taking some time away and going to a beautiful place with those closest to me."

Putting away the notepad and pen, Yukimura gently touched Tezuka's arm. "I haven't thanked you for coming back, have I?" Or for many other things.
