Ooooh slash!
Feb. 2nd, 2005 10:04 amThere is a moderate-length article in today's Metro about "Slash Fan Fiction". Given it's a free newspaper, it's done quite well. At least it points out that it's usually homoerotic and almost exclusively written by heterosexual females (note the "almost"). They interviewed two slash writers who said that it interests them the same way guys like seeing girl-girl action, and on occasions writing slash gives them stress relief. Which I think sounds very nice. Oh there's also something about a LotR actor finding out about slash at a convention, that he felt weird about such writing of his alter-ego/character but doesn't encourage or discourage it. He said something like "At least I know that one of us is having fun on a Friday night" XD
The one thing I especially like about the article is that it gives the scale of things, saying that if you search for slash fan fiction on google, you'll get over 400,000 results with guides on how to write it, archives, academic papers etc. It illustrates that slash is a world-wide thing, not exclusive or repressed. There is much demand and supply.
For a free newspaper, I think it's done pretty well.
I saw some interesting/funny articles and letters in Metro on Monday as well. Saved the paper, but never got around to typing it up. Something about why British Empire countries drive on the left, is Jaffa Cake a cake or a biscuit, etc. Hmmm maybe if I remember to type or scan it tonight...
