The story of how my computer died
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:56 amWOE.
Sis really wanted net connection back. Having uninstalled SP2, I suddenly remembered that "bug fix" that was supposed to fix that SP2 TCP/IP problem (which didn't work for me and loads of other people), so I uninstalled that as well.
BAD MOVE.
After that, I can't even connect to broadband myself. So I went to system restore and got back to a point before I uninstalled the bug fix. Didn't help with anything. So I tried to get to an earlier restore point. Emphasis on the "try". The computer crashed half way through system restore and now the system is messed up completely. I can't even use it as a proper computer. It's so fucked that after logging into Windows, I can't copy& paste or move files, I can't open my Outlook to back it up, I can't burn anything... eventually I've resorted to sending files from my C drive to other drives by zipping them and telling winzip where to create the zip file.
I'll try to boot into safe mode and back up my emails tonight. And then try to do another system restore in safe mode. If that doesn't work, I'll have to reinstall Windows. Which isn't that big a deal, apart from the fact that I've never formatted and installed an OS before, and that I host my own stuff on the comp i.e. it's a server. And I wasn't the one who set it up, so after formatting, I'll have to figure it out by myself somehow. Which should also be okay since I've fiddled with the IIS before, but I've been using No-IP.com and that account wasn't set up by me as well, I don't have the login details meaning I'll have to sign up for another one unless I poke my ex for the login details which I don't particularly want to do. Which is also okay except it means all the stuff I have linked to blaze.hopto.org won't work, I'll have to manually change it to the new account's address. My websites can be easily done through the domain place, but everything I've linked on LJ so far...... *cringes*
It's a wonder I haven't (what was that word on
temps_mort?) thrown the computer out the window yet.
It's one of those days when dying in bed felt more attractive than going to work. The only thing that got me out of bed this morning was the fact that I can use the net at work =_=

Good luck!
