After a conversation on Facebook, now I really want a forum/comm where people can discuss cosplay and express opinions in a civilised manner without others immediately jumping and saying "drama alert". These days you can't talk anywhere without somebody saying "oh noes this might evolve into drama" and then a mod puts a stop to it just in case because people are immature and can't be trusted to self-police.

Also, a place for people who know how to use Google, with interesting questions and discussion rather than yet another thread for "how do you colour your eyebrows" and "what's those contact lenses that cover the whole of your eye". Where "hey, look at this costume I made" (or similar regular updates on a costume in the making) isn't smacked down as attention-seeking and "give me some critique please" isn't seen as inviting drama.

I do to but I think it will never happen. Not unless the age limit increases.

I know its a horrible thing to say but I have noticed that a lot of the drama/annoying threads are from much younger people. I hate being ageist but it does seem that way to me.

Maybe someday someone might be up for doing an over 18/21 costume forum.

There's always the option of starting an LJ comm with approved membership and posts locked to members, I guess. I'd do it if there's enough interest. It doesn't have to be highly active, but if anything is posted it would at least be interesting/useful/funny, like a little place between friends.

Call it "cosplay improver's". Make it a place for people who know the basics, but want to get better.

Hmmm, that's an idea. I'll have a think about it, put together some comm rules and see if it's worthwhile or if it'll cause some "you elitists are having an exclusive club!11!!!" drama...

But if there is a comm, rule no.1 will be: before posting a question, use a search engine first.

I think, if you did the forum, you could have a small area for those who are new to cosplaying to ask those questions (eyebrows, contact lenses, etc) if they are too lazy to go to a search engine. You'd also be able to have a play to do WIPs and completed projects.

Somehow I don't think LJ would be the best for what it sounds like you want.

There's already a place like that, that's the thing. It seems like the same questions are being recycled every month there because newcomers (or even those who've been there for a while) never use the forum's own search function or google.

I was reading the above comments and was wondering if there should be like a mini test before accepting membership. Stuff like:

Using google, youtube, cosplay.com, LJ (insert any other resources)

Find the links for tutorials on FtM make up. The source or sources must include eyebrows, application of false eye-lashes, contouring, facial hair (or whatever is left?)
What is a serger? Name 2 brands of sergers.
What is an over-lock stitch?

Its basic stuff that anyone who bothers to look up anything can find. For those who know it, it probably wouldn't hurt as a refresher.
