Struck by a random urge to read PoT fic, I clicked on an old one that a lot of people said is brilliant but I never read because I wasn't interested in the pairing.

................it's okay. It's fine. There's plot and characterisation and grammar. But the pace is slack and the build up quite weak and the plot not very exciting. And perhaps I have longer memory than others or actually read more carefully because I spotted repeated phrasings and descriptions which were not done intentionally to make a point, more like the author didn't have enough of a range of ways to talk about things. I wouldn't call the fic brilliant. Am I expecting too much? Or maybe that pairing - not a major one but not unpopular either - simply didn't have great authors so anything that's "fairly good" automatically is "amazing"?

I find that with most fic I go back to. I guess fandom gives things a bit of a halo.

It does. Though I think some pairings did get the better writers. I remember the days when D1 writers were accused of skewing the fandom...

I find that after hanging out in Torchwood fandom that Tenipuri fiction just doesn't compare when it comes to plot and build up. But then tennis vs alien hunting is a little unfair.

If the story was chaptered maybe readers didn't remember as much from one chapter to the next if they had to wait between them?

Or we can just point out a certain series of books about vampires with very little plot, lack of build up and the author's lack of range and how popular they are and feel really depressed.

And if you're craving fics, new ones are being posted at [livejournal.com profile] top_cagonotte Not sure what pairing you're looking for, but there's been some interesting ones go up so far.

I reckon it's about ticking boxes, sometimes. If a fic or novel satisfies a large number of kinks, even if it's not put together well it'd still be popular.

Very possible. I know I've read more than my fair share of questionable fics because of any number of reasons ranging from boredom, to be hooked on a pairing and reading everything I could on them or just because the premise was intriguing.

Still depressing when a work of fiction doesn't live up to its pimping though.

You know, I find that in the smaller fandoms: they don't have much people who write about it, and therefore every single fic, no matter how good or bad it is, is automatically amazing, just for the simple reason that it has been written at all. :/

But even in larger fandoms, and even with pairings that are hugely popular, there are authors who are popular and whose fics are praised by practically everybody, and then when I've decided to read them, I've just thought, "well, it was okay, but I can't see what all the fuss is about". Then again, some people do have really low standards when it comes to fics, and don't require much else than a cute plot (if it can even be called a plot) and their favourite pairing. >__>
