1. I know that when newsreaders say the weather is "treacherous" they mean it's unstable/deceptive, but when I look out the window I can see how bad it is, it hasn't changed suddenly, so it's not unstable or deceptive. What the hell are they talking about then?

Is the weather actually going to be betray me?

2. David Tennant = Richard Hammond.

I wonder if they're referring to Black Ice, which cannot necessarily be seen on the road, but is there, and could cause skidding/accidents? Hence deceptive.

It's not the sort of thing you contemplate, when English is your first language, but it's totally interesting to consider other perspectives. It is a pretty stupid word to use, the more I think about it!

It could be! But I wish they use a different word. It seems so silly.

Yeah, I thought of black ice, too. I always read treacherous as being hazardous - weather that poses hidden risks, which hidden ice definitely does. I don't like it when they use it to refer to rain, though; water is not hazardous.

AHA. I thought David and Richard were the same person, too, and then Top Gear ruined it by putting David on the show.

*nod!*

XD I just watched Casanova (BBC, with David Tennant as Casanova) and he looked just like Richard Hammond most of the time, it was scary!

Treacherous can also mean 'providing insecure footing or support' apparently.

So really they're telling you that you might fall over!

(which certainly would be true of the ice rink formerly known as Cardiff city centre today)

Oh God, yeah. It's iced over between my home and the train station, too. I wear wellies and walk very carefully.

I think it's their bounciness - they just both seem to have endless fidgety energy reserves!

Treacherous can just mean dangerous or hazardous, too? It implies that you should be careful. Also, I think they use it because it sounds better than just dangerous!
