(did I ever mention how I find it funny that some people can't spell even though English is their first language? After 11 years-old, no one has ever bothered to teach me any spellings, but I think I'm doing much better than some native speakers! XD)

Maybe... or it's just laziness...

My written French is as flawless as my English one. I purposefully try to write as clear and as grammatically correct in any language I use, so that I'm understood.

But I've noticed that younger people's written French is awful and I do blame poor schooling (they don't get teach the basics the way I was as a child... and I was an avid reader).

Also, finally... I think someone like us (aka for whom English is a 2nd or more language) may find it more difficult to write BADLY on purpose... I don't use English slangs or acronyms or net-speak because I just can't twist my mind around those while for a native, it's a lot easier.

Being an avid reader is probably a big part of it. As for younger people, well... sadly, lacks on spelling and grammar have little to do witha ge. It comes easy to some of us, and others just can't get their minds around it, apparently.

But I do enjoy the (mild) use of slang, acronyms and net speak in English, while I go on a full-blown rant every single time someone uses them in French in my presence (and admitting that makes me feel extremely hypocritical). Using these patterns do have amusing qualities, as long at it doesn't become a habit.

Or something. I'm not really coherent at the moment. And hi, fellow French-speaker. ^__^

Well, I didn't claim that to be the whole answer, just part of it... and I totally agree with you on the question of laziness! I don't send even an LJ comment without reading it through at least once (and still there are typos *headdesk*), but I realize not everybody is striving for it. And I also agree, writing badly in a foreign language is pretty difficult for me!
