Argh. Things happened this morning. The end results are: my back is in pain and I got to work late.

I just started rereading The Shadow of the Wind. It's been a few years and I've forgotten it all already. All I remember is that it's good. It's amazing, in fact. But if you're looking for reviews and crits, you're better off reading the blurbs (it's got plenty) and reviews online. I wish more of his novels get translated into English. "El Juego del Angel" will be released as "The Angel's Game" but won't be until mid-2009.

Unni, I'm working on my wish list. Where's yours? >D

Today, this thought came to me: if people could put up with other people liking "The Da Vinci Code", they could deal with the current "Twilight" craze, or any other "unjustified" (pov depending) crazes. Mocking is fun but if you're actually going to complain, go and do something else. You might think the author doesn't deserve the fame and wealth - and you might be right - but there are lots of other injustices in the world that's far more important. People liking crap novels and crap authors becoming celebrities is really not worth being angry about. Stress and anger is not good for health, you know, so why pile it on unnecessarily?

Also, since "The Da Vinci Code" is, to quote Stephen Fry since I agree with him, arse gravy of the worst kind, but still so celebrated, one must remember that if your own fics are well-loved, it doesn't necessarily mean you're good at writing.

Sad, but I think it's true.

Because even just sitting down is bringing me pain, I'm not in a great mood today. If you talk to me, be prepared that my words probably aren't very polished or rounded.

It's often true that popular=accessible=lowestcommondenominator, quality-wise. Balancing "at least they're reading" versus "but couldn't they read something better" is probably just an exercise in frustration.

Heat pad?

Also, look where ore-sama is staying next month! He's going to mingle with The Stars. I need a hidden camera.

That. I need to frame that and put it up on my wall. Not to say most things don't deserve popularity or that obscure+difficult=cool, but it's still true for many things I can think of.

I'm waiting for ibuprofen to work. If it doesn't, it might have to be heat pads.

You know those childcams you can get these days for spying on the nanny........?

The Shadow of the Wind really is amazing! I feel head over heels with Fermin, he's so hilarious. And thanks for mentioning that another one of his books is going to be released in 2009. I'll definitely snap that sucker up.

El juego del ángel is everywhere in here, I believe it has already won an award or something.
and well, thanks for saying if it's a good book. I was having my doubts with all the publicity. XD

I don't know about that one, since the English version isn't out yet, but yeah, The Shadow of the Wind was really really good. :D

Sorry, that was the idea. I was out of bed and it takes a while to think properly. XD;;;
Probably The shadow of the wind is around somewhere.
But I'm terribly cheap with books. >.>;;

I've stopped moralizing about literature. I read things that I enjoy reading and other get to read what they're enjoying.

Hypes tend to annoy me, partly because I work with books and their readers and have to deal with the hysteria at close range. For a while a day didn't go buy without someone telling me that The Da Vinci Code was the best book every and also completely truthful, or that it was evil. The Da Vinci Code may not be great literature but it is entertaining. Twilight may be bad, but if I were 14 I'd get off to it. That won't stop me from mocking the books, but there are no real hard feelings there.

I read The Da Vinci Code from cover to cover - and then threw it in the bin. It was really entertaining and I wanted to know how it ended, but after that, I decided it didn't even deserve a place on the shelves of charity book stores. XD;;;;

I feel exactly the same as you but in terms of music. I just don't understand how something so poorly written and brainless could be so popular and praised as if it's the only piece of music in the world. It gets to me too but well, that's why I'm learning the ropes so I can be better than they are one day which, I will be, let's just put it that way.

I keep seeing The Shadow of the Wind around and vaguely wanting to read it. Hmmmm. It is sounding more and more worthwhile.
