Just doing a quick calculation to see if my future salary will be able to cope ~_~ NI is deducting 23%!!! *weeps* This country is so nutters.

wow only 23% ... I get almost 40% taken out of my pay every month, although that does include compulsory medical insurance, it still sux

Um well I'm not sure how you'll get to work. So basically you just need to price a monthly ticket or card for parking, price your food and do a large shop once ever pay and only for things like fresh veggies and fruit in between. Gah, I'm not fussy on clothes so I don't go for names, just what I can wear. For your first year an overestimate for utilities usually helps. I pay 65 euros electricity a month, my water is included in my rent as is my heating. I also pay around 80 euros for phone/internet a month, and we have to pay to have a television and crap, so I'm not sure what it's like for you.

Over all (mine looks something like this
Eating: 100
Travel: 0
Rent: 400
Misc expenses: 100 (including feeding my animals)
Clothes: 50 (I don't buy every month but added up... that's 600 a year)
Utilities: ap. 200

This is all in Euros though... so yeah... not sure if it helps lol

They deduct 40% at the next salary band... luckily I'm not there yet. Or maybe unlucky that I'm not earning that amount...?

Actually my sis said it's 23%... but I'm not that sure... I read somewhere that says 11% *confused*

*goes to work out sum* >_

Income tax 22% taxable salary (40% is the rate for salaries over £30k)
National Insurance 11%
Plus you'd need to consider pension provision.

All the juicy details are here (http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/rates/it.htm). Not that I'm trying to depress you or anything...

It would include the basic state pension but you really don't want to rely on that because (1) it might not be around when you retire and (2) it's pitiful.

ps Don't know if it's an option for you, but if your parents are in a position to help put financially, then you might want to discuss options other than rent. Friend of mine got her father to pay the deposit on her first house when she was a student, then rented rooms out to other students to cover the cost of the mortgage. She's quids in now.

Rent is a soulsucker...

My dad had been planning to buy a flat/house here, but then the housing boom started x_x With the way things are going in my family though, it is likely he will buy a place soon... but it doesn't seem like it'll be anywhere near where I'll be working, but a place more convenient for my sister(s). ^^" Which means if I live at home, I'll have to go from London to Essex everyday. Time, cost and unreliably train service... so many concerns >_<

I know! Wish I know what to do... *sigh*
