...you know, even when I was young I think I only had one phone number memorised other than my home phone number & my parents' work, and that was the phone number of my then best friend... I never remembered anyone else's. Still, these days I don't even know your number or Syl's or... err, my dad's home phone number, actually. (But that's probably ok because his home phone is almost never fucking plugged in.) =_=""
It's good to know a few numbers by heart. A friend once was locked out of his hall in the middle of the night, his phone's battery was dead and he was too embarrassed to call security, so he slept outside the hall building. =_=
......I don't remember you number either. :D; *LEARNS*
7074855602 <- phone number of the house in redwood valley (lived there from age 3 to 10) 7075786960 <- phone number of the house in santa rosa when I lived there with dad (of and on between 10 and 14).
...I know my mom's landline number, but I have *no* idea what my own landline (the one I internet with) number is XD
I don't remember what Jenni's (sis in law) number is, but I do remember that it is a palindrome 8D;
All I know is that it's 995-something. XD; I'm sure it's written out on the panel but eeeehhh too much effort and my line is primarily internet use only anyway XD;
Before cell phones, I used to remember everyone's numbers by heart. And then things changed.
I think cell phones make it less justifiable to not keep in touch. So easy to look someone up. If you write a number down and lose the paper or misplace it, then you can use that as an excuse. It's harder to misplace a phone (though I still manage to do that >_>). It makes me really sad when I think about someone I used to be close to and realize I've forgotten their numbers, when I used to know it by heart. It's funny how phone numbers sort of...represent things.
Not sure. Because numbers meant more, I think people used to be more careful with remembering them or putting them down properly in a phone book. (And I find the act of carefully writing down and making copies of contact details kinda romantic (?). It's like writing letters > writing emails.)
*grins* I lost touch with most of my friends before I had a cellphone. XD Though my best friend in elementary school saw my sister a few months ago and my sister gave her my house number... mum wrote down friend's number from answering machine and I promptly lost it. XD *fail*
I was exactly the same way. I tried to keep a phone book, but it was never updated. Just scraps of papers in drawers, because I am a lazy person. I sympathize. That happens to me quite a lot.
Now I think I'm gonna write myself a note to remind me to print out all my numbers from my palm once I get home. I only know Drae's landline, Ina's number if I try very hard, and a couple of very old numbers from pre-cell phone days. If we ever went apocalyptic disaster I wouldn't even know how to reach my mom. >_>

Date: 2007-12-31 11:49 am (UTC)I still keep a separate phone and copy my contacts carefully, the act of writing them down is quite romantic.
And yes, when I'm deleting contacts, it does feel that I'm deleting people from my life and it freaks the hell out of me too.
