Cosplayers/sewing savvy people - help!

I'm thinking of making the Shinigami costume for a Bleach cosplay.

1) Is it worth making? I could just buy online but with shipping, it seems rather expensive (although, buying material to make things here may end up costing the same as ebay >_>). And less fun. Online pictures are really small anyway, can't see if it's good quality...

2) If I do make it, what sorts of fabric do you suggest for the white outer "coat" and the black kimono?

Help appreciated, thanks!

One of my friends is a seamstress, do you want her e-mail?

It's alright, thanks. I just wanna see if someone's cosplayed Bleach and can tell me their experience.

Hakamas are quite hard to make if you want them completely accurate. I'm sure there are guides around for it though on the net. If I were you though, I would just buy it online, because however "badly" they make it, it will at least not be ill fitting since it's so loose.

If you're going to make it, just make the base out of something relatively heavy and thick, so it doesn't look like you wrapped some black fabric around you, and possibly use a heavier and nicer fabric for the white (but not overly heavy? Since the thing has to blow in the wind and stuff) - just some heavy cotton should do the job I think.

But given that you are going to be needing a lot of said nice fabric it might be more economical to buy the costume, but if you think it's less fun, make the props that go with it yourself?

Yeah. I've found some rather good guides, though, and am tempted to give it a go myself. Now thinking of using a black cotton twill...

btw, will you be going to London Expo?

Mmm if you think you can do it, then go for it I say. \o/ I don't think it's a costume that is THAT hard.. you're doing Hitsugaya right?

Yar I shall be going. Have to come back down from Nottingham for it though. *hassle* Dx

Yeah, hopefully, and make one for Liz's Matsumoto. Not sure if I'll get it all done in time though, if not we'll just wear it another time...

:D You'll be cosplaying?

Mm yeah 2 seems to be abit ambitious for 2 weeks. XDD If you don't get it done in time, I'm planning to do an Ishida, so we can do it together or have a photoshoot or something. \o/

Yar, from Reborn on Saturday and then from Code Geass on Sunday. XD

Yes, we should! ^^ I'm going to make Liz's first, because I can always go in an old cosplay (Zero again maybe), and she can go as Matsumoto because she always just went and helped me carry stuff XD So if I get hers done at least, she can participate!

(aw, but you'll make a good Byakuya too!)

Ohhh who from Geass?

XDD Yeah, that sounds good~ We were supposed to do VK this October actually, and not Reborn, but since the costumes are STILL not finished (missing the rose buttons and the silver diamondy things Dx) we won't be able to get it done in time. =_= And yes! She can participate this time round! I think she'd make a great Matsumoto too - especially with the right wig. \o/

(XDD Yeah but I think Ishida suits me more? But hmm if you do end up with a production line of those outfits, I can always order one from you and do a Byakuya as well ohohohoho~ xDDD)

Cornelia. 8D We have a Euphinator, a Zero and a Clovis too. 8D

i bought a hakama for £40 but the top andstuff i made with friends, it's quite easy once you get passed the planning stage. Easiest bit was the white underneath gi thing, which was jsut a gi for me i cut the sleeves off, and for the Captains robe, you have to pay attention to the lining of the inside depending the captain, it's not hard or easy, just annoying especially when you have to tac a collar on

Gah, completely forgot about the white gi inside. =_= yet another thing to buy/make.

Probably not going to bother about the lining (Hitsugaya's is dark green I think), unless I have a lot of extra time...

mine took my a while to make and it's very hot D: i'm not using thick matieral for lining again D: but use a fabric that you can paint onto without bleeding if your gonna do the markings etc.

i gotta make a shinigami uniform for soemone tomorrow night which shouldn't take me lonsidering i've made like one and a similar one on the same design

I've done this one, I used the destiny's lobster pattern which involves a tape measure and I adjusted for dollfies, I it's shape and pleating that make it complicated
one one hand it's the simplest thing you'll ever make and certainly the comfiest.
you need a dark black fabric, you could line black polycotton which would make it light but heavy enough, you might have to weight the edges though with some pilling.
This is a costume that comes out in the ironing not the making
the white haori-kataginu thing would be more complicated because cheap white fabric always looks cheap
you might want to check with a upholster (there is a market stall where i live) and see what they have, it's not much more expensive than polycotton but heavier, a good quality curtain lining cloth could pull it off for you.
Would you use a woman's or men's pattern, because I've noticed Rukia wears the man's
