There's been a lot of talk about identity fraud, keeping your personal details secure, etc etc. Some coworkers have taken to buying a mini shredder to shred their documents like bank statements and bills.

I'm sort of contemplating getting one too. Is it a good idea or is it unnecessary? o_o

Mmm, I just tear up any such documents like that and scatter throughout different garbages- especially the kitchen garbage, because I doubt most identity stealers are going to want to pick rotten veg and meat slime off a torn up bit of a bank statement.

I doubt it would hurt. You might also want to make sure your bank and credit card company provide some protection for your accounts. When my husband's credit card info was recently stolen, the credit card company didn't charge him anything.

I tend to keep hold of bank statements etc anyway (just as well when the taxman came calling) but have a shredder for when I do want to clear things out. You can get them very cheaply. The most important thing, though, is to keep an eye on your accounts; I've never had any problem querying a transaction with my bank.

I keep mine, too, but now have statements dating back to 7 years ago and probably the ones before I started a full time job aren't worth keeping anymore.

Will probably check out the shredders at Woolworths and Argos...

Shredding bank documents, bills, anything with your name and address on that someone could use as proof of address is a good idea. Does your work have a shredder you can use?

They don't have one... might get one myself, though ^^

o.o Huh, that's novel. Never considered something like that. To me it sounds like overkill, but then again we live in very different surroundings. If the shredders are cheap, I don't see why you shouldn't get one, though. :)

Does your bank offer internet banking that don't cost a lot? I do all my bank stuff online, and I don't even get the paper statements anymore. All those files are online, so I don't have to worry about losing them and be annoyed by all the paper trash they make. :)

Yeah, this sort of fraud happens a lot here (or so says the TV news).

I use internet banking, but also get my statements on paper. Not sure if my bank actually offers paperless banking, I should check.....

My parents have one. Even if it's not necessary it's kind of fun to use >_>

Definitely get one. If not, just tear it up by hand or burn everything. :)

(No seriously, when we have our own yard my family does burn all documents haha!)
