My grandad knew chicken intestines
Feb. 16th, 2007 08:12 pmDon't mind me I'm just being odd (again)... geriatric1927 got mentioned on telly today so I went to watch his videos on YouTube again, and somehow started thinking about my grandad (mother's side). Funny old man. He could make a lot of things out of newspaper. And he could speak "chicken intestines" ie. English. (the English language was termed chicken intestines in the old days I think because when it's written, it's all long and twirly) He wasn't that good, of course, but he could manage things like casual greetings and such, which was a LOT for someone from his days. Even though he worked in a bank at some point, English wasn't a requirement!
There's this photo of him, quite old already, shaking hands with a big tall foreigner in a suit, likely some kind of government person. Where he lived, when he was rather old, had loads of geriatrics and whenever an "Englishman" visited (to rally for local votes, inspect the community, whatever, when there were still lots of British people in HK government), he was the one to say hello because nobody else could. XD I wish I know where that picture is, I'd like a copy.
Somehow, the thought of "my grandad knew English" makes me... giddy and proud. XD
Like I said, don't mind me, I'm just being weird.

Oh wow, your grandad sounds cool!
My grandad (from my mother's side) made one of the big main bridges in HK and one of the underground ones... I'm not sure which ones, I forgot. But when I went in summer my mum was like "your grandad built this bridge we're driving on". He was one of the head people in the construction of it. I know the feeling, it makes me proud too! =]
