I'm not a happy Pez today. The main desktop at home seems to have been hacked last night. Nothing I do could let it access the internet - I could go on IM, but not webpages. In fact when I booted the machine up, explorer.exe didn't start properly. There were some unfamiliar-looking processes when I checked Task Manager and with the little time I had in the morning, I couldn't really look into it so I copied down the names and will check them out here at work. (and I think I can still get online from the other comps at home, so if I can't find any info now, I can use the laptop or something...)

There isn't anything important on the comp that people can steal, and I make sure bank details etc aren't saved in any forms (in fact, I usually only use internet banking at work because work has better net security!), but one can never be sure, what with cookies and cache and all those stuff I don't understand. It's like your house has been broken into but it seems like nothing's been stolen, but.... flsjhfkaslfhksafhls what the shit? I almost want to call in and say "my computer's been broken into, I need a day off" because don't people say that getting the comp broken into is just as bad as getting a break in at your home? And don't people get to stay home to sort things out when things happen? **

Work is driving me nuts because I'm being overloaded. That is normally a good thing (makes me work better), but these are all tasks from different schemes and I can't keep track of so many things at one time.

sfklsdfjlskjls;fs SO ANNOYED.

** Niou: Yeah and people say gay is a sickness. Try calling into work gay.

Pez: I WILL TRY THAT ONE DAY.

[edit] Finally asked my dad if he has any connection I could use for looking for work, in a "recent update" email - well, he was the one asking "How are you getting on with your attempt for a 'sabbatical' in Japan?" first! So hm. I don't really think he'd know anyone but it can't hurt to ask...

Bleh, hacking. That sucks. :( I hope they didn't get anything of value...

To Niou: The thing with gayn is that it doesn't go away that easily. So maybe Pez should only use that excuse to skip work for like, six weeks in a row.

Hi Pez!

If being gay'd give me 6 weeks off, I WILL BE GAY NOW. XD

Hi Drae! How's you? Your birthday soon 8D I know because your birthday coincided with new Discworld novel the last 2 years and another new one has just come out, reminding me of your birthday XDDDD

Yeah, but no doctor could be sure you're cure, so you'll have to stay off work for EVER. :p

Me is very busy, what with work and uni and my first move EVER ZOMG. Also slightly sick to my stomach due to too much candy.

My birthday wins by coinciding with new Discworld books. HAH. :) And you win by offering them to me the past two years. ;)

That means gay is a terminal illness and I could prolly claim state benefits for it!!!!

XD Have you got plans for the day?

So could I, then? That'd be cool. No more work!

The birthday, you mean?

I think the state has stopped treating it as a sickness for a while now. :p

Sunday. Plans are to enjoy my possibly homemade cake, gloat at my notso secret gift, and watch Teh Pretty that is Death Note for the 245th time. Also make a last ditch attempt at learning all the f*ing pinyin for the test on Monday. >_>

You could go to a country where they do treat it as a sickness! But I think they lock you up or beat you up there.... oops.

XD Pinyin isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. It's getting the hang of it that's the bad part ^^" Good luck with that!

And cakeeeeeeeeeeee *______*

Give it up, Pez. You can't get off work this easily. XD

Yeah, but that's like saying a language is easy to learn as long as you can speak it perfectly. ;_; Also, I have a test on Monday, where I'm supposed to know it perfectly, and--- ;_______________; I can't make the difference between half the consonants.

And I'm not even going to start on the tones. *headdesks*

YEESSSSSUUU. Except Tine can't make the only one I want because I've been stupid and lazy, and I'm not sure what to ask for, now.

okay, SG has her "I used to work in a computer bank" hat on.
first of all they may not be interested in what you have in your bank, it could be spam related, what happens is they set up a ghost on your pc and then use it as part of a hacking circle, so if they get caught it will go through all these different computers
or they'll use it to send out one of hundreds of attacks at the same time crashing the server
unfortunately it happens, it's happened to me,
I'm a bit gungho when it comes to this (years of working for egg and hearing evrey horror story going) and format my hdd just to make sure, but I have about six firewalls and things. if they get into mine i'll be surprised but it has happened.

It's all a bit ironic because last night I was just reading the BBC news article about how they looked at hacker activities by setting up a honeypot trap, and now it's sort of happened to me!

Not sure about the severity yet, hopefully not too bad. Might be a chance to format the comp anyway... but there are so many files I need to burn first =/

now you see why i back up everything!

From: [identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com
I do back up sometimes, because I've lost a lot of things on a dead harddisk before. But I normally just back up the essential stuff, otherwise it'd take too long to do... oh well.

I have taken time off work for computer woes (and more recently tax woes). I've also had my bank account hacked. I actually thought it was worse than being burgled (which has also happened!) because there was that whole sense of being spied on and not knowing when it would stop.

It's really distracting, sitting here worrying about my computer at home. Been thinking about getting it more firewalls, but people say this one is crap and that one is rubbish, it seems like no firewalls are actually worth money out there.

Depending on whether I can get it fixed quickly, I might just go an format it... would help me feel less worried about "being spied on", like you said...

You're making me think that I should visit Steve Gibson's website tonight and run another Shields Up test.

I hope you'll format your PC soon about the hack thingie? :O Geez, I hate when it happens to people :(

I could go on IM, but not webpages

That there seems like a hint of a dns problem more than a hacking one.

explorer.exe didn't start properly

That there tells me your OS might be screwed, maybe. Unless it has stopped happening by now. (the explorer.exe problem itself, not the rest)

There were some unfamiliar-looking processes when I checked Task Manager

Sounds like spyware, even when adding the other symptoms.

So, if you can use IM and wanna work on this, contact me? I can lend a helping hand or at least tell you if your only solution is a format. =/ Don't hesitate to ask me, because, even when I bitch about my work all day long, I actually have a passion for this and take pleasure on it. :)

I looked up all the unfamiliar looking processes and they're all legitimate >_> just made another post about it... the comp seems to be working fine now. I have no idea what's going on >_>"
