Photoshop - and it sucks! >_< I can't do text properly... so I think I shall go in search of another programme... hmm, I haven't tried painter classic... is that any good I wonder... *wanders off to experiment*

Animated ones? I used to use the U Lead Gif Animator thing... until it died on me. ^^;

Try hunting down pixel fonts. That's probably your biggest font issue there, not photoshop. Also pixel fonts look and read better with either the text aliasing set to strong or off completely. If you're using script fonts, make sure you use some that are thick and that can read at small fonts. There are some but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Good sites for pixel fonts. The 2nd is a compilation of sites.

Paintshop Pro mostly, JASC Animation Shop for animated icons - sometimes in combination with VirtualDub (ie when I'm working from a movie segment).

Paint Shop Pro 7 & 8, Adobe Photoshop 8, Adobe Animator, Gimp are my choice of poison. I prefer PSP over all other programs though. More control over fonts...or at least that's how it feels to me.

Fireworks usually, sometimes photoshop to fiddle with the base images if they need a lot of cleaning or I want to add lots of filters or whatever.

I love icon making. ^_^

Wah! An icon qn ar~! That I can answer! *feels smart*

Photoshop7 - it's easy to manipulate images than PSP
Paint Shop Pro 8 - this site (http://syndarys.sinfree.net/tutorials.html) gives you tutorials on how to make icons using PSP8. Very cool.
Animation Shop - You can do pretty cool stuff. And it's EASY!
Fireworks - it's pretty decent for simple animations.

Bascially I do all my image treatment in PS7, then use PSP8 for outlined text and some special effects.
