Can someone please tell the clueless Pez what this thing about Rikkai and Troika really is?

Reverted to my ZukaFuji layout. Staring at this picture still makes me melt on the spot. ♥

And I still root for Johnny Depp to get an Oscar. But I'm biased.

Johnny Depp should've got an Oscar last year *shakes fist at the academy* So of course I'm rooting for him this year as well. :D

And... I have no idea who/what Troika is, or I would help you out. ^^;

JOHNNY = LOVE

Troika is a carriage pulled by 3 horses, by definition. The word's now being used as company names and such... I suppose they call Rikkai that because of the Yukimura, Sanada and Yanagi power triangle, but everybody's saying it and it's become some sort of a weird culture, I wonder if they know what they're talking about -_-

Yeah, "troika" is Russian and I think it means basically the same as "trio"... and actually it's not the carriage, it's the team of three horses pulling it, where typically the middle one is the one really harnessed properly to pull the most weight while the other two on both sides of it are there just to provide some more speed. I've mostly seen it in winter pictures where the horses are pulling a sleigh, not a carriage. And hence, "troika" is also often used about any team of three people that tend to spend a lot of time together, do things together, etc.

As I don't know much about PoT I'm not sure if this applies to the case in question, but: if there's, say, a sports team called XXX that consists of 12 people, and three of them are particularly visible/competent/famous, it would sound to me completely OK to refer to these three persons as "the XXX troika" - whereas it's completely wrong to refer to the entire XXX as "troika". Because a troika consists of THREE something, be it horses or people or whatever.

Okay, here ends the cultural history lesson *sweatdrop*

*spams your eljay uselessly*

wikipedia is down, so I guess dictionary.com will have to do? :D and yes, horses, but it also means 'triumvirate', i.e., 'a group of three men responsible for public administration or civil authority'.

I first remember hearing and using the word in context with SanaYanaYuki during a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] supplanter or [livejournal.com profile] morphaileffect, I think. *points fingers blithely* I guess it's just a word for trio, or threesome, or triumvirate, loaded with this extra meaning? and this reminds me of Ennio Morricone's 'The Trio' which I really need to get my hands on. xD

the horses are really pretty though, it's kind of the arrangement. they're harnessed abreast but the wingers kind of arch their necks to face outwards, so it's quite a nice sight, I just hope they massage the horses afterwards.

I first saw [livejournal.com profile] tongari use it and it kinda stuck as the english fandom's nickname for Rikkai's 3 geniuses. :D But when I further looked at the troika horses, there was a passage about how the central horse is the dominating and most important horse. In Genius 215 of the Yanagi, Yukimura, Sanada picture, Yukimura was in the middle. So. D: In Japanese they're called the 三鬼才 by Akaya and 三強, but there isn't a catchy translation for that other than "3 geniuses" so Troika stuck. XD;

When I first saw this word related to them, I had to look it up. D: But the dictionary doesn't contain the troika horses part. I saw that in Russian History. XD When I heard it I was like "OMFG PoT!!!" ;;;;;
