趙紫陽安靜離世, 終年八十五歲

Zhao Ziyang dies in Beijing, aged 85

I remember very little of my childhood, but I do remember being 7 years old and sitting in front of the TV in Hong Kong (bless freedom of the news in HK) wondering why young people were on the streets of Beijing and why they were being killed. Being politically ignorant, the only thing it meant to me was the world had gone crazy. It was mad. Pure horror.

There is still a photobook at home which recorded the massacre. We still have newpaper cuttings. We put them all away but we have them. I don't know who has seen what, but the photograph of a young man ran over by a tank, that's still in my mind.

Our whole city was so shaken, seeing really for the first time how hard the Chinese government could come down on its own people. We were within swimming distance from the motherland and only a few years from the handover. But I think the real terror was, regardless of there being a handover or not, how people could treat one another like that in the modern world.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I'm just feeling this knot in my heart, reading about Zhao's death. It's brought back a lot of memories.
