It's a bit strange reading websites that ask questions like "why are road signs installed 18 inches from the kerb - it killed this scooter driver" and "why do you install the safety barrier - they make it more unsafe! And why is it some distance back from the carriageway, how does that prevent any crashing?". People are so quick to accuse but not ready to accept that there may indeed be a reason. It's just like in murder trials, the victim's family would always be devastated and vow to get justice if the accused is proved not guilty - hey, it may mean that the police actually made a mistake and caught the wrong man! Maybe the murderer is still out there laughing at you!
I guess it's hard to remain an open mind in all circumstances, hm?
And then there are people who scream speed cameras cause more crashes because of people breaking suddenly - if they weren't speeding in the first place that wouldn't be necessary. And people in HK screaming bloody murder for the $1500 fine for dropping litter - look, if you don't drop it, you wouldn't be fined. Simple.
Not saying that what we have currently is perfect (I would be a fool to get into the speed camera arguement, and there are things we can do in design to encourage drivers to use low speeds as natural driving behaviour), but if we can be a bit more appreciative and cooperative of what we have, wouldn't the world be a nicer place?
btw,
putting on makeup while driving is a bad idea. So is talking on the mobile - even if you are using hands-free.
Watch this video and you'll see why.
