Torgal - home

Torgal/Allan, work safe.

At a time long enough ago that it would be called "once upon a time" in a mitra story book, home was a typical house in a typical village on a piece of land not governed by any lord. The sovani community Torgal was born into led a tribal existence, with its own society and leadership structures that were respected by the rest of the world. It was still the same way now; no lord would be foolish enough to anger the sovani people even with the help of Remnants, especially when the land they occupied was not worth taking.

In the typical house in the typical village, Torgal led a typical sovani childhood. He had two parents, a brother and a sister, all of whom were most likely still alive now. He was sure at least his sister was, since he occasionally still received mail from her.

Nothing special or devastating happened to Torgal's life when he lived in that home. His family travelled once in a while, and when Torgal was old enough to survive on his own, he chose to go and see the world. The decision caused a few small frowns, but although sovani were a proud people, they were hardly arrogant or blind enough to live in complete isolation. To those who wished to journey, the community gave them their blessings.

So, with nothing more than two swords in his hands and the clothes on his back, Torgal left the village by himself. Eventually he founded the Steel Syndicate. After that, David Nassau I - Lord David's grandfather - invited him to work for Athlum.

Silence filled the room. Blocter looked at David, who looked at Emmy, who looked at Rush, who realised he had been nominated as the voice of the group.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"Come on!" Rush leaned forward in his seat, so curious he was almost twitching. "There must be loads of dramatic stuff! Tell us!"

"The drama is all in your imagination."

Rush, Blocter and Emmy made a collective sound of disappointment, with Blocter's tail swishing tail limply for emphasis. "Then why did you sit us all down when you've got nothing exciting to tell?"

"You asked about my home. I never promised a stimulating tale."

How much Rush wished he was at the penny theatre so that he could buy some rotten vegetables right now to throw at Torgal's placid face. The feeling was made worse when David, sitting on the other end of their little arc of chairs, chuckled. He probably knew from the start this was going to happen.

Perhaps sensing deadly thoughts coming from Rush's direction, David smiled and made a suggestion. "All right. Torgal, why don't you tell us about the Steel Syndicate?"

The idea drew a cheer from the rest of the audience, but, an ear slanting back, Torgal looked at his lord. "It's getting very late, my lord."

In response, David tilted his head by tiny degrees, his eyes briefly checking the clock on the wall. "You're right; it's time to turn in. Maybe next time?"

"Maybe next time."

Even after everyone else had left, Rush was still pulling faces at David.

"What is it?" David laughed helplessly when Rush even began to pout.

"It's not like Torgal often tells people about his past! You shouldn't have let him go like that!"

"Torgal is not secretive, he just seems that way. And he did say 'next time'." David shook his head and shooed Rush out of the library, closing the door behind them. "You are staying here at the castle, but the others have to go home at night."

Rush was going to grumble some more, but David's words made him think. "So where's home for Torgal now?"

David smiled cryptically and shrugged.

Home was in a decent, quiet area, but still just a typical house. When Torgal entered, he received a glare that meant "what time do you call this?" and smelled the food being kept warm for him. After taking a quick peek in the kitchen, he went back to the front room where a number of swords had been laid out and someone was checking and polishing each one with great care.

Torgal went to stand behind him, bent down and kissed the base of a split-end ear. He received a shiver and a hiss.

"How many times have I already told you not to do that, idiot!"

Torgal paid the words no attention, his hands having caught and put aside the blade that slackened fingers nearly dropped. Then he bent down a little more, burying his face in the crook of a warm neck, breathing in the familiar scent of the familiar pelt.

Home.

You know that place where back-of-ear meets head on a cat? The fur is always extra soft there. ;; I bet it's the same for sovani people. ;;

Dave has not experienced Torgal's wrath himself (because Torgal would never hurt him ♥) but he's seen it unleashed on Blocter. It left a lasting image.

But if Torgal hurt Rush, wouldn't it make Dave sad? Torgal wouldn't want to make Dave sad.

You're implying that Dave wouldn't be sad if Torgal hurt Blocter. Blocter's all sad now. :(

Well, if Rush is all ouchy then Dave can't touch him until he heals, because he's all soft and fragile. But Blocter is tougher and heals faster. So Dave's not *quite* as sad.

"Blocter looked at David, who looked at Emmy, who looked at Rush, who realised he had been nominated as the voice of the group."

this entertained me more than it probably should have.
