The author is not your bitch. Fuck, yes. Thank you. THANK YOU, NEIL GAIMAN. You continue to be made of complete and utter win.
To be fair, I do think he was harsh with his reply and the person who wrote in didn't mean "author missed deadline and let me down OMG" but rather, he asked, "is it unrealistic to think so?", but. What Gaiman did was address something that some people do have issues with and it's a really important point. I'm sure anyone who does any sort of creative stuff, be it professional or casual writing, or painting, or music, etc, will know the feeling.
Also, some people forget that not everyone tells you everything about their lives in their blogs. They might say they painted the house, played some video games, but they may not necessarily tell you the other things, like his daughter ran away with a drug addict, his dog died, he went away to do charity work for half a year. People forget this, and then they say, "how dare he play video games when he has a novel to finish!!!111!" orz
Best of all, when they are told that they were wrong and actually the author had been having problems, they might say, "well he didn't say anything about that! He only talked about video games, that's all I have to go on! He should've just said he had problems then I wouldn't have said what I said!" .......and so it evolves to the fans actually trying to dictate how their authors or idols should use their blogs and what they should say or not say. LOL?
Then again, it's not like we don't know that fans don't know how to read anyway, even though they claim to be readers of books. I still remember this 2-year-old post of GRRM's, in which he said, "Who's in? Not maybe, or I'd love to, or I'd-be-in-except-I-live-in-Istanbul, but definitely going-to-be-there-on-February-20 in." And the first comment was "Wow I think I'm the first post. What an honor! I've never been first. I'm not going but I wanted to be first..." To the same post, there was also this comment and this comment. Hmmmm...
But, oh, a pizza crawl. What a brilliant idea. I'd love to do that. Or a dessert crawl. Or just any food crawl...
Still ficcing, of course. I'm trying to make Torgal imperfect. It's pretty hard to do andthe fanboys David and Allan are yelling at me, "how dare you say Torgal is not perfect!" and I'm dodging attacks from the Valeria Heart and the Furfur.
But at least I know I have Emma's support.

Date: 2009-05-13 05:10 pm (UTC)Entitlement bitches. It reminds me of all the Ghostbusters 'fans' who were wanking over Rick Moranis not wanting to be in the project to provide voice for a new videogame. Cause, yanno. We saw his movies! He owes it to us! We made him rich and famous and now he's a twat!
Nevermind he retired years ago when his wife DIED so he could take care of his two little kids. He has done a few projects for close friends, but that's it. But nope. He still OWES people. *eyerolls*
Of course, everyone reports, 'He got so rich he doesn't want to work anymore,' which just makes it wankier.
Sigh.
NOT THAT ANY OF THIS MEANS ANYTHING TO YOU BUT IF YOU KNOW WHO RICK MORANIS IS THEN IT MIGHT.

Date: 2009-05-13 05:50 pm (UTC)Having problems! Not with imperfect Torgal, but with getting the right feeling down with words. I have it all in my head and my chest is exploding with it BUT I CAN'T WRITE IT RIGHT. DX

Date: 2009-05-13 05:54 pm (UTC)In that post, someone mentioned that some HP fans wished JKR would have a miscarriage so that she could concentrate on writing books. WTF. If I ever become a writer (haha) I DON'T BLOODY WANT FANS. I'LL JUST BE VERY POOR INSTEAD.

I followed the links to those comments on GRRM's post last night and just stared and blinked for a bit. T__T People are such idiots.
