[livejournal.com profile] crystalusagi and anyone familiar with TVB's rendition of Jin Yong's novels...

If you're only going to buy one of the following (because damn, they're expensive), which one of these would you buy?

A. 倚天屠龍記 | The New Heaven Sword & The Dragon Sabre (1986 version)

B. 射鵰英雄傳 | Legend of the Condor Heroes (1983 version)

C. 神鵰俠侶 | The Return of the Condor Heroes (1983 version - I actually don't mind the later version with Louis Koo, but this one is the only DVD set I find, not to mention it has subtitles in 3 languages!)

D. 鹿鼎記 | The Duke of Mount Dear (1984 version)

(I know one's supposed to watch B before C, but it really doesn't matter since C stands pretty well on its own.)

Suggestions and thoughts? And if you've seen TVB's official English subtitles before - what are they like? Any good?

Go for B~

C irked me for some reason. And I didn't really watch the versions you stated for A and D; watched the Lawrence Ng version for A and the Jordan Chan version for D; and liked it D:

So yeah. B. But that's just my opinionXD

The Jordan Chan version is ♥! Haven't been able to find it with English subs though, which doesn't help because I'm wanting to introduce my housemate to the world of Jin Yong. ;;

B is good, too~ I think HSDS has a better pacing, though. B drags on a bit too long, I think.

And heee. Yes, Introduce Liz!! 8D

Sadly, I've not seen any of the above, but I liked 天龍八部 best, though I'm not sure you can find the tvb version anywhere. I 've certainly tried.

Is it the more recent one with Jimmy Lin, or the old one with Ken Tong?

The older one. I haven't seen the recent one.

>___> I would pick A or D. But I'm biased! I have them both and the subtitles aren't bad. They aren't fantastic, but you can tell they were done by people who actually know English somewhat XD

It may be fun to buy A since you haven't watched it yet (right?) and also then I could squee about it with you XDD Because it's my favorite out of all of them (though I really like 1983's Huang Rong. I've always thought Xiao Long Nu was a bit annoying.

Duke of Mount Deer is tons of fun, though. Really charming. You get to see them rolling around wrestling like little boys, and feeding each other food.

D= But HSDS! My brother-in-law has all four of them, and HSDS is definitely his favorite. He says he can watch it over and over, back-to-back. So it's not just me.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it's between HSDS and Duke of Mount Deer then. XD It's a really tough choice! I'd buy both but they're not cheap. =_= and nice and long too. XD

They both have really excellent soundtracks. Jin Yong adaptations of old always had great theme songs. If you're buying something to introduce Liz to Jin Yong's stuff, I would suggest HSDS, which is more his sort of thing. Duke of Mount Deer was a bit of a departure from his usual stuff. Less... wuxia-ey.
