Remember me saying yesterday that the rotary kiln acted funny?

17 days till the deadline of my FYP (that's Final Year Project), the kiln died on me. It went puff, a spark flew out, then switched itself off.

I was sitting a little away, drawing up a table to fill in the data once the firings are done. Got a bad scare - a bad scare not as in "OMG I'm gonna burn to death" but rather "OMG did I just break this thing?!!?". Turns out the kiln's been funny ever since the department bought it, and it had been fixed by the manufacturer several times already.

No. There is no "phew" in this, because after a quick inspection, the technical guy decided they might need to buy a new kiln. Even without the upcoming weekend + bank holiday, I don't think they can get a new kiln right away. And I can't use the other kilns in the lab because it's not suitable for my experiments.

17 days until deadline. And I have virtually no data to put into my FYP. It's a little too late to change the project from "experimental" to "theoretical" now - besides, the thing I'm researching on is quite a new idea, with almost no literature available to look at.

My supervisor is at home today, supervising his 5 yr-old daughter instead of me. I do have his home number, but calling him to explain the current situation right now still doesn't mean anything can be done at all.

I'm not panicking... but I'm still screaming OMG WHAT AM I GONNA DOOOOO inside my head.

erm....maybe...just maybe...phoning him on a saturday while he's shopping or sunday while he's at mass might get u a slightly better deadline?

definitely inform him that the kiln blew up, because it's purely technical error and if he won't give an extension he has to at least take it into account. but yeah, ask for extension if you really need it and I"m sure he'll have to allow it, it's not your fault at all.
