Date: 2007-11-07 01:48 am (UTC)UM HAI I HAS FIC-BIT?
Date: 2007-11-07 12:05 am (UTC)Let's see how many comments this requires.
----
It was early afternoon when Renji got the message, a little whisper into the back of his mind, to let him know he was required. It was later, almost evening, by the time he made his way up from the subway and into the streets of twelfth district, broad and clean and strangely uncrowded in a way which made him feel faintly exposed.
The sun was touching the horizon when he reached the block of flats Yukimura was living in and sent up a message, making his echoing way up the twisting, would-be archaic stairwell to the second floor.
The Yukimura who answered the door was cheerful, relaxed, every inch the good host; the Yukimura who closed the door again behind Renji was more serious and far sharper.
"I hear you have work for me," Renji prompted, slipping off his coat.
"What do you think?" Yukimura asked, sliding the file across the table towards Renji.
He picked it up, tapped his way through screen after screen of data, neat little facts and figures. Maps, schedules, codes. Notes on points of strength and weakness. Personnel files. It looked very much like the work of someone he knew.
"Very thorough."
"Yagyuu decoded as much as he could. Good enough?"
"Good, but I can work on the information."
Yukimura nodded, a faint smile hanging on his lips. "I rather hoped you would say that."
Renji almost laughed. "You mean you weren't certain?"
"Few things in life are certain," Yukimura told him - a mismatch of solemn tone and quietly amused expression. "I considered the probability, as you might say, to be high."
And as the author of the file he held in his hands might say, a ninety percent probability. But that was why he could do better. If you tried to map humans too exactly, pin everything down to a percentage, just so, neat and precise, they would surprise you over and over again.
Sadaharu had never quite grasped that fact. Unfortunate, perhaps even regrettable. And no longer his problem.
"Where did you get this?" he asked, as casual as possible. The look Yukimura gave him was sharp anyway.
"Where do you think?" he asked. "Yagyuu acquired it."
Yagyuu worked, officially, for NeoNET.
So did Sadaharu.
Re: UM HAI I HAS FIC-BIT?
Date: 2007-11-07 12:06 am (UTC)"Did you say something?" he asked. His shoulders ached, and his neck too. Careless.
"Only about ten times. I'm getting food. You're having some too."
"That did not sound like an offer."
"It wasn't. You know that."
The food, Renji conceded as he was led firmly into the kitchen, did smell good. It tasted better.
"Fresh ingredients?"
Yukimura's elusive smile made a momentary appearance, flitted away again as quickly as it had arrived. "Allow me my little indulgences."
Renji nodded, and firmly suppressed the part of his mind calculating the difference in cost between fresh food and the widely available alternatives, pushing it back towards work.
"What do you think of the possibility that Inui planted that file to be found?" he murmured after a few moments' thought, glancing sidelong at Yukimura, who didn't pause in his eating.
They were silent until the meal was finished.
"I think," Yukimura told him, "that it is a possibility, especially if you say so. You recognised the file as Inui's, then."
"I did." He could not fail to recognise Sadaharu's work if it had been taken to pieces and put back together again in the wrong order by a determined AI. He had worked with the man's coding for enough years, and re-written enough of his reports into the sort of language which did not require three degrees in computing to understand. But Yukimura did not need to hear that.
"Is Yagyuu's position in any danger?"
"I believe you are meant to be the one who is omnipotent, if talk on the street is to be believed," Renji said, letting his lips twitch into the beginning of a smile. "I am only a former programmer."
"Renji. You're teasing me."
"Inui is the kind of man to mix false information with genuine as a matter of habit. I do not believe it automatically indicates that Yagyuu is in danger of being discovered."
"Hmm."
"If you are wondering whether the data has any value despite the possibility of alteration, I believe so. And if you are going to ask why Inui keeps this data, it is because as much as he mistrusts the world, he mistrusts his own memory more. It is just the sort of person he is."
"How many steps ahead of me are you?" Yukimura asked, shaking his head as he stood to clear everything away. "No, don't answer. And pull the bed below the cupboards out when you want to sleep. I refuse to let you travel at three in the morning or whenever you decide you're finished."
Yukimura Seiichi, Renji thought, a proper, soft smile making it onto his face. The new terror of Japan's underworld, who liked to feed his men home cooking and told them off if they didn't get enough sleep. The world was, on occasion, a stranger place than he had ever imagined.
Re: UM HAI I HAS FIC-BIT?
Date: 2007-11-07 12:07 am (UTC)The lights must have dimmed themselves down at some stage, and Yukimura was asleep with his arms folded under his head, propped up on the far corner of the desk. It was such an ordinary scene, somehow; for them, bordering on jarringly mundane. For another person it might be easy to forget just what they were. They could be students who'd stayed up too late to finish a paper, perhaps, although students would not have had fifteen surveillance cameras placed strategically around the main room of their home – not to mention the other little security measures. Renji knew them all; he had helped install many of them himself.
Yukimura's hair had fallen in his eyes. Renji did not reach out to brush it away, although the temptation was there. He could not have said why.
"Seiichi," he murmured, and then again, louder, when Yukimura didn't stir. "Seiichi."
"Hm?" Yukimura shifted, looked up. He looked his age for once. "Are you done?"
"I am, although I'm afraid if you don't go to bed right now I may be forced to refuse future jobs."
Yukimura blinked sleepily at him, opened his mouth, closed it again.
"The report will be waiting for you in the morning," Renji told him. "Goodnight."
Morning found Yukimura awake before him, datapad in one hand and coffee in the other, studying the information Renji had drawn out from Sadaharu's jumble of encryption and false data. Renji didn't try to make conversation; Yukimura was a habitually early riser, but the reason for this was somewhat mysterious. It was evidently not that he was simply a morning person – more probably it tied in to some personal idea of discipline. Alternatively, Yukimura could have masochistic tendencies. Although the first theory seemed more probable, Renji had never attempted to confirm it.
Some things one was, perhaps, better off not knowing. Sadaharu would have thrown a fit at the very idea.
"Could just anyone have pulled this together?" Yukimura asked, a quarter of an hour later.
Renji shrugged. "No. Myself, perhaps one other person that I am aware of. " And Renji was not meant to be a threat any more. The other person… well, it was possible Sadaharu did not know. Everyone's knowledge had some gaps, and a rigid certain that you were in possession of all the facts could be dangerous.
"I see. A lot can be taken care of, using this. If I was in charge of NeoNET I would want to have words with my employees about storing this sort of information, however jumbled and encoded…" Yukimura raised an eyebrow, looking up at Renji. "But I'm not. You've done well."
Renji nodded, took a sip from his own coffee. "Thank you."
Yukimura looked thoughtfully at the datapad again, fingers of his free hand pressed to his lips.
"It may be time to blow Yagyuu's cover. If you think we have enough to work with."
"As much as we ever will." This data, other scraps from here and there, drawn in and filtered through, cross-checked and compiled. It was highly likely that an attempt to temporarily cripple the corporation's infrastructure at this stage would be successful, if sufficiently planned. That was the best statement of probability that they could hope for.
"And your view of the matrix security?"
"Heavy, but…"
Yukimura nodded. "If you're sure."
"I helped code that entire sector," Renji pointed out. "If NeoNET knew I was working for you – for anyone else – they would have ripped out their system and started from scratch."
"Mm." Yukimura leaned back, stretched, and stood, sliding rapidly back towards the professional front most people would deal with for the rest of the day. "It's going to be a good week."
Perhaps not for NeoNET, Renji thought, or for their customers. The small part of his mind which still viewed the world from the other side of the glass was faintly horrified by the idea, but his agenda was different now, along with his loyalties and interests.
---------
And that's all she wrote. Sorry it's so WTF and rough and everything.
Now, sleep.

Date: 2007-11-07 03:24 am (UTC)"Seichii," he began patiently. "All you have to do is ask and I'm sure Genichirou would buy you your very own drink."
Tilting his head, he considered the paper before him, smoothing the paper with the edge of his hand. Robo-Sadaharu looked so much better in red ink than in plain, old pencil. The snake that slithered alongside him was a nice touch, too. Perhaps he'd scan it and email it to Inui later. Perhaps he wouldn't lose interest and the urge to needle his old friend would still be there when he got home.
"What would be the fun in that?" Yukimura asked, already gazing out at their classmates - most of whom would now quickly turn their heads as though they hadn't been staring only seconds before. As though Yukimura weren't used to such idolization and didn't delight in it in some small, secret recess of his heart.
But then Sanada slid in beside Yanagi, effectively sandwiching him between his two friends and he let Yukimura's question hover between them, unanswered. Sanada's thigh was solid and warm against his own and he didn't say a word when he placed a cold, unopened soda just at the corner of Yanagi's notebook.
To his left, Yukimura began to talk - something about Akaya - and Yanagi risked a quick glance to his right. From beneath his cap, Sanada met his eyes briefly and the smile they shared held more weight than any of a dozen words he might exchange with anyone. Even with Yukimura.
"Thank you," he murmured, fingers already sliding lightly, innocently over Sanada's thigh to squeeze - just once - in secret, sweet affection.
Sanada didn't answer, choosing instead to press his leg closer to Yanagi's. It was more than enough.

Date: 2007-11-07 06:06 am (UTC)This is where it happened. This is where the three of them...
"I'll go take a shower," he tells Renji, then leaves.
He's in the bathroom, his shirt already off, when he realizes that he forgot to take a change of clothes. He reaches for his shirt again, and is about to put it on when a knock sounds on the door.
"It's me, Genichirou." Renji's voice. Of course it's Renji's voice, because no one else is home; they are all off at his uncle's. "I brought you your clothes." Sanada almost smiles. It is just like Renji to appear with the thing he needs exactly when he notices that he needs it.
He unlocks and opens the door, and Renji steps in, holding his clothes out to him. His eyes travel across bare skin, and Sanada feels suddenly embarrassed. He should have put his shirt on before letting Renji in. "Thank you," he says, taking the clothes from Renji.
"You're welcome," Renji replies, offering a smile. And then he doesn't love. Instead, he holds Sanada's gaze and takes a step closer. He reaches out to touch Sanada's bare arm. His hand feels warm. It makes the knot in Sanada's stomach feel even tighter.
"Renji," Sanada starts, "I don't think..."
He doesn't say anymore, because Renji steps even closer and suddenly they are embracing, Renji's hands gripping his arms tight. "I think," Renji murmurs very softly, "we need this." A pause, and then he speaks again, his voice strained. "I need this, Genichirou."
Sanada's chest hurts, but he reaches up and pulls Renji in for a kiss anyway.
It is not the same as kissing Yukimura, and it is not the same as kissing Renji with Yukimura watching closeby, telling him to keep going. But it is good. It is still wet, and slick, and hot, and enough to make him hard.
