It may vary the place you send it from, the weight of the package and if it's regular mail or a delivery service. Maybe it's just to get the idea that it's gonna be expensive.
Uh, I don't think that's true. Sending 1kg worth of things to Mexico by ordinary airmail costs £11, but 1kg is a lot of weight... sending 500g costs £6.........
