The word HANG. Please tell me if I'm using it wrongly:

1) To hang a painting | The painting hung on the wall | The painting has been hung
2) To hang up on someone | I hung up on someone | I've hung up on someone
3) To hang a murderer | The murderer was hanged | The murderer has been hanged
4) To hang around for a while | I hung around for a while | I've hung around for a while

And please don't tell me the British and Americans use the word differently. My brain can't cope.

Apparently 'hanged' was always the correct version but it went out of use . Also, 'he was really well hanged' would change the entire meaning of the sentence.
