But isn't that something perfectly normal to do? People do that when they're stuck in the lift, I do that when I'm in bed and too lazy to move and turn on the light just to see the time.
I think it's about using your observation to make your story believable and realistic, and what you wrote sounds perfectly fine.
Somebody once said to me, take "magical boys" for example. Boys go to school, learn magic, cause havoc in the process - this can be Harry Potter or one of the many gazillion novels you can find in the bookshop. It doesn't mean they're stealing ideas from each other. It's all about how you make of that idea.
