進ぬ!電波少年 (random TV rec)
Aug. 7th, 2009 08:28 pmSomething just reminded me of this incredible show.
電波少年的アフリカ・ヨーロッパ大陸縦断ヒッチハイクの旅 (Hitchhiking across the continents of Europe and Africa with Denpa Shounen) was a reality TV show from 1998, in which a radio DJ from Hong Kong and an aspiring actor from Japan were left at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, given 100,000yen and told to go all the way to Nordkapp in Norway, ie. from the very south to the very north.
They had to earn their own money for food, travel, shelter and to pay for visas, get over cultural barriers and overcome lots of difficulties. They had one cameraman with them, under strict orders that unless they were actually very sick and dying, the cameraman was not allowed to interfere.
It was really good, inspiring, heart warming reality TV. (Never imagined reality TV can be described as such, heh?)
The Japanese show, with Chinese subtitles, can be found in 16 installments here. I wonder if it's available in English.
