As for the thing about series recs, I know exactly what you mean. I have friends who are really into the major series, but those get so long it feels like it's impossible to catch up with them, so I don't usually bother.
And on an unrelated note, you just reminded me that I am incredibly behind on Vampire Knight. I'll have to fix that soon...
