Getting really confused

1. Still don't know who sent me the Christmasy flowers & chocolate.
2. Tried to buy mattress today. Oxford Street John Lewis had a very small selection, consisting mostly of their top range which I can't afford. I tried lying down on a few of the cheaper ones but... the problem is, how would you know if it's good for you unless you've slept a night or two on it? I just couldn't tell. Some felt too soft when I sat down on it, but when I lay down it seemed to be pretty good.
Searched online for a while and everyone says different things. Some medical research said that although traditionally people say harder mattresses are better for bad backs, actually a medium-firm one shows better results. Some even say softer ones are better. Some say that memory foam is the best because it moulds to you and gives you support where you need it. I'm totally confused now. Can I borrow some of those mattresses and test them at home please?
