A slightly strange question. In the Old Testament, Book of Exodus, it described what the Egyptians Israelites had to do at Passover to avoid their first borns being killed... in the actual Book, the Lord said He would be passing over, but commonly people say it was the Angel of Death.
Did this Angel of Death have a name? Was he Azrael, or a different angel?
*googles and wikipedias and everything*

Date: 2007-07-17 02:32 pm (UTC)The Christian Bible itself rarely ever gives angel names. I think Michael was the only named one for that. I'm sure other Bibles mention more. But like any other myth, there are many versions/variations depending on which tradition you follow. For one, Wikipedia gives Samael for Judaism, and Azrael for Islam. I'm sure there are tons of books on angels out there, if you need more thorough references.

Date: 2007-07-17 02:44 pm (UTC)as a rule you can tell from their name
-el means of god
Michael means who is like god
lucifel means light of god
so if you can figure out the first part you're laughing
raphael is the angel of wind, music and healing
metatron is the voice of god (and leader of the decepticons)
sandalphon is the hand of god
i'm trying to remember there was a time when i could also name all of legion but all i remember now is that
belial (mad hatter in angel sanctuary) was the harlot, the tempter of women that they might make wantons of their children, corrupt their husbands and defile the high mass
and balberith was the devourer of children
look it up in the catholic encyclopedia, it's like a holy version of wiki

Date: 2007-07-17 03:11 pm (UTC)there are some you can rule out immediately because they are fallen
but i was always taught it was Gabriel and the archangels that did it
but i went to a convent school, i was taught if you see an angel - run
that they "bowed obeisance with one wing perpetually dipped in blood"
the catholic encyclopedia is www.newadvent.org
they might have more info than me
I know it's not Azrael because that's an alternate spelling of Israel or Land of god
my money would be on gabriel

Date: 2007-07-17 03:34 pm (UTC)more or less in the old testament the angels were all interchangable mean mo'fo's that tore the place apart, raped the women (hence the nephilim) and were generally nasty
I think it's a take your pick thing
although i know the catholic church praised the prophecy film (which you watched at the squee in wales) because it matched it's doctrine and it had gabriel as the angel of death
i think it's dependant on who you ask
shrugs

Perhaps not very angel-y. Alas.

Date: 2007-07-17 04:02 pm (UTC)Oh, just ficcing. It's a light-hearted story, in which one of the characters is actually the angel who killed all the first borns, so I wanted to know what his "angelic" name would've been...

Angel Sanctuary screwed our notions on angels.
