I saw the picture and had to do a double take because I was all O.o why is Pez posting something from Toronto. That's what I get for looking at the flist after just getting up.

The fact that they have BLING on their sign there makes me chuckle.

And it sort of reminds me in the louvre in the fact that they are both museum/galleries in old buildings (some older than others clearly >.>) and then this weird glasss strucure was added on. Though I think it looks pretty cool.

And one day, I'll learn commenting after just getting up leads to rambling.

Don't think so. But then again, every bloody architect out there (and architectural students) have designed buildings like that before. It's just the matter of who managed to get a client who's willing to pay to make it real.

(I don't like it either. I have high respects for its structural engineers though!)

Got curious and checked. :o It was him. xD But yeah, it's quite a generic concept (the angular I'M GOING TO STAND OUT AND COST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SO PEOPLE NOTICE ME RAWR approach) which I'm not too fond of. :/ Though his Jewish Museum in Berlin was win.

(Same. XD I can't imagine having to make that work as a structurally sound building!)

Oh~! And yeah, it's like a trial of luck. There are a lot of good paper architects out there, who design buildings that really stand out (but not necessarily pleasing to the eye >_>), it's just who finds the client to pay for it. Zaha was a paper architect for over 20 years before she found her "water-fish" fame...

Totally. And even if they manage to make it stand up, the actual building process must've been so difficult (the side of the facade that's overhanging the road, for example. Making it stand up and getting the space to build it means they probably had to close the road down when it was being built). So many architects use comp programmes and generate weird forms that they don't understand if it can be constructed or not. =/

It'll forever be known as the Bling Museum to me. XD

Yeah - it's hard to find a client who is willing to pay for something like that. Though I have to agree they aren't always good looking. :/ Or they overuse an idea a la Frank Gehry so it just ends up being stupid. -_- I didn't realise that Zaha Hadid was one for so long. :o I actually really like her work.

Yeah... not only the building itself, but construction must have cost a lot. :/ I wonder if it's really worth it sometimes, for the amount of disruption that building something like that can cause... ah, the joys of over reliance on CAD programmes.

Well, there's only so much you can work with in architecture I guess - if you don't reinvent you are stuck with being a "follower" of a certain school, so to speak. :/

It's a personal thing, but I prefer old buildings to new. If I was an architect, I'd use ideas from old churches etc and have the building built with stones and have statues and carvings everywhere. XD

I laughed when I saw this post, since I have to see it virtually every single day on my way to school. XD

I have to say that it's looking a lot better than it did before. While it was under construction, it looked... special.

While I don't hate the new building, I'm not happy that they had to tear down a sizable section of the museum to build it -- especially since it doesn't increase the size of the building so they can still only display less than 5% of their collection. It also put the ROM in debt. Stupid napkin.

Oh, and they were going to build a 40 story condo behind it to match, but everyone vetoed the idea. XD

It wouldn't surprise me. Such a shame about the size issue. People seem to only go for the look rather than functionality these days... such a bad way to spend money.
