WTFBBQ?

I'm not much of a fan of fandom_wank, but I do go there when people tell me there are interesting posts or if a certain person (who seems to have now disappeared) is mentioned.

And this link I just nabbed from my friends list.

Pay me or don't ever ask me about my WiPs. Who cares if it's fanfiction, I shall make a profit from it anyway (in the disguise of "people are supporting my living, not paying for my fanfics), who cares about the legal issues. And how about writers who stay up late at night and early in the morning to try to make their publishing dreams come true? They're just idiots.

[edit] SO CUTE *wants to make icons out of them...*

[edti2] and this is cute, too!

I wonder. If we didn't have fanfiction/fandom to wank over, would we still have a need for LJ? *smirk*

Stupid female.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2005-08-11 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
And apparently the work she's asking money for is a collaborative effort, and she didn't bother asking the other authors before making her post, too!

I saw.

I'd quite like someone to pay me to stay home and make amvs, might actually make some decent ones then. Even though I only work part time, and there are weekends, and I've been off work for nearly 2 weeks now so I could have done something...

[identity profile] mirichan.livejournal.com 2005-08-11 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
SHE is still around, trust me. It's just that she's using a new alias as she's not (supposedly) into fandom anymore.

As for that girl. I hope to god someone will denounce her to the PTBs... she's just too stupid for words.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2005-08-11 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, the person of many aliases and sockpuppets. I do remember seeing somewhere that she's got many many email addresses and names...

the lone dissenting voice

I saw the original post when it was only yet vaguely smelling of a wank-to-be, but of course it's gotta blow up.

The thing is: I personally think that if it weren't for the wankers, this would be a perfectly valid request. Think about it for a second without the OMG RAGE attitude.

- This chick says she doesn't have time for fanfic anymore, period. There are too many things that take priority over it, including making money so she can spend the free time she has on writing original fic. This seems normal to me, especially since I am re-reading my favourite HP fic at the moment, which will never be finished, and I'd give a lot to at least get a plot summary of the chapter that were never written.

- Her fans keep clamoring for her to finish her WiPs. She feels bad about that.

- She says, okay, if it would pay me the same amount of money, I could finish the WiPs.

Of course, as she wrote in her original post, this was the STUPIDEST thing ever to post on LJ, or elsewhere.

It was absolutely clear it would blow up in her face, with everybody screaming bloody murder. Just like everybody did when we got together thousands of dollars for Nancy to have a cancer operation she couldn't afford. Or when we collected money that within 24 hours bought three new laptops for Cassie, Josh and Ruby after their house was broken into. But of course, because they're BNFs, it is BADWRONG to collect money for them. Because BNFs are superhuman and do not deserve kindness just because a lot of people like their fanfic and some don't.

Anyway. She should have known better, but it's a real pity that just because she *posted* about the idea, everybody now sporks her to death. It's been done before for published authors (the name escapes me, but some comic writer recently was able to quit his day job because his fans collected 25.000 dollars so he could take a year off to write his comics).

I do, of course, see the legal issues. She should not be paid for the fic. And as I said, she should not have posted it at all. But it seems clear to me from her original post that she meant no harm, and that this is not a money making scheme.

*shrugs*

I'm pretty sure she meant no harm, but it is a stupid idea, period.

This comic writer... it sounds like the fans collected for him, instead of him asking for money. And what he'd produce is original work...

But apparently the fic the woman mentioned she's going to finish, if given money, is a collaborative work and she didn't mention it to the other authors.

Also, there are many many people who're trying to write. Every one of them wants to have the time for it, not having to worry about paying bills and such... well, Zadie Smith wrote "White Teeth" whilst she was in university. Stephen King's debut "Carrie" was written whilst he had 2 jobs and living in a trailer van with his wife. JK Rowling wrote HP because she had to find a way to support her childen as a single mum. The way this woman spoke is as if she wants an easy way out. But sadly, reality doesn't work like that.

Like you said, it's a stupid idea and it shouldn't have been posted.

[identity profile] chinawolf.livejournal.com 2005-08-11 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that many people wrote stuff by juggling other jobs etc, and still wrote good books. But there're also the lucky cases like Susanna Clarke, who got a gigantic advance for her novel even though she had never published before. So just because most authors can hardly make a living by writing, that doesn't mean all may not, just because most have their first novel rejected thirty times, doesn't mean your novel is bad if the first publisher you show it to takes it. I buy doujinshi which pay the author for their work. I would buy commissions by my favourite artists to draw my most beloved scenes from Harry Potter if I had the money.

Evindentally, no one loves her fic so much (speaking hypothetically, I didn't know it involved co-authorship) they would pay a few bucks for it. That means she isn't good enough, and that seems to me the strongest argument of why her scheme cannot work.

Again - I can't help thinking that I would gladly pay 20 dollars for a summary of the rest of Mirror of Maybe, or even a few dollars per finsihed chapter, and am sure a couple of my friends would, too. Whatever - it's clear that she is not really a smart light, so I certainly will not defend her any longer when I can't be sure her intentions were honest.

As for the comic writer - nope, he had the idea, posted it on his blog, gave regular updates of how much money had been collected, and when the target sum was reached, handed in his resignation.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2005-08-11 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the original author's standing on it too, I suppose. Japanese publishers consider doujinshi a form of free promotion. On top of that, the majority people who draw doujinshi don't really make real money from it, they only make enough to cover the material and printing cost, not to support their living. But the person in that post wants to be supported.

From her posts afterwards it seems like some people have paid (she mentioned paying them back). So let's just assume she's a good author ^^ I don't want to sound like I'm totally trashing her without knowing who she is. I just don't think it's a smart idea, that's all. Even if she's very good, she ignored the other authors and the legal issues and that's just... *sigh*

*meep @ comic writer* Ah well. ^^" at least he did completely original work, I hope.

I do think, though, collecting money for operation and the computers was a very good thing. I remember seeing a f_w post on the computer collection and I totally disagreed with the wank. ^^ When Dimmie had all her Gackt CD deliberatly damaged, Drae and Arith and I got some money together to buy her replacements too. I think it's simply a gesture of friendship to the person and defiance against the bad things :)
