When I was in Britain about five years ago, we had some very delicious meals. I couldn't understand why British cuisine had such a bad reputation.

Agreed. And even if he doesn't like British food, that just was not the time or place to make such a comment. *grr*

He might be trying to get back his popularity over here by making such stupid jokes. I mean, it is common in France to joke about the nastiness of English food... But at any rate, that man has no concept of what just isn't done. *rolls eyes*

*snort* Oh, this is just a follow-up on Italian PM Berlusconi's recent brain farts... Italy and Finland were competing for some "food office" of the EU, which Italy got. And last week, when the office was being officially opened, Mr. Berlusconi said among other things that it couldn't possibly have been given to Finland because Italian food is so infinitely better than Finnish food, and that he'd used "playboy tactics" on our (female) President, Tarja Halonen, to have his way in the dispute.

To which our President commented that perhaps Berlusconi slightly overestimates his charming powers... (well done, Tarja!)

It's pitiful, really. And these are the international diplomats who should promote cooperation between nations, yadda yadda? Who then accuse others of "having no sense of humor" when not everyone is laughing themselves sick at their silly little jokes?

overestimates his charming powers

*SNORT* XD

Holy heavens. Doesn't that man have someone to shut him up when he starts saying something stupid? And it's not the first time, either...

I like one of the comments people have made though: "I presume this means that Chirac will be bringing a packed lunch to Gleneagles?" *snort*

[identity profile] factorielle.livejournal.com 2005-07-05 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No he won't. We're talking about a man who is known for spending 15,000€ a day on food expenses, you know. But maybe he'll bring his own chef. >_>

While I agree that British food often leaves something to be desired (except for puddings and anyf00d associated with tea), I also guess that one should not make such comments while in office. :/

should not make such comments while in office.

Particularly when one is within the hearing range of a reporter!

That's a given. :// We all know politicians aren't as perfect, don't hold up to that higher standard that we want them to hold up to, but he was pretty careless. Or else it was on purpose, which I wouldn't put past him.
