Why are the ZukaFuji fics these days so horrific? Is it because I've stopped writing for that pair? But honestly... everything I click on ends up burning my eyes. And with every ZukaFuji exchange, the overall quality of the work goes down by another notch. It's so sad. They used to be my favourite pair. You know, there's badly-written fic with potential (I happily read them and I write them myself), and then there's BAD fic. The thing is, those writers seem to be so self-consumed (is this the word I'm looking for?) and they ego-stroke each other so hard they never actually realise how crap they really are. Sure, writing (fanfics) is about what the writer enjoys the most, primarily, but how much do you really enjoy it if you don't seem to be seeking to improve? I read work from some time ago and ones from recently and they still all look the same. So how much do they love writing, really? Do they love writing, or do they love the "popularity" it gives them?

No, I'm not going to tell them they suck and what they need to improve on because it seems to me they never read anything that's not on a screen.

On a very loosely-related note, if a fic rec says anything along the lines of "this fic deserves a lot more comments/love than it's getting", then I wouldn't read it. Reccing something should not involve describing the Tragedy! Injustice! Unfairness! that something has suffered. Just tell me why you enjoyed it and why you think I'd enjoy it. More than that and it's guilttripping and hard-selling and it's the quickest way to make someone feel turned off.

No, I'm not nice today. Tomorrow I'm going to Altrincham. 9 hours roundtrip for a 1-2 hours meeting I shouldn't even be going to. This is my happy face.

This pocket of the fandom is now overrun with people of the "Tezuka and/or Fuji aren't gay, they're just in love with Fuji and/or Tezuka" mentality. I hate that. So. Fucking. Much.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Gay for just you" syndrome. HELP.

[identity profile] evaporate.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I've fallen out of fandom. :(

I want to like it, but there is nothing to like! Everything I've read recently just rehashes all the old stories. :( What happened to originality? Seriously, at this point I would read a super-awful OOC Tezuka/Fuji space opera just for the novelty. (Or maybe I wouldn't, but you get the idea.)

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Come to the dark side Rikkai. There are still quite a few good writers and improving writers over here. >D

[identity profile] evaporate.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally would if I could come to like Rikkai as much I like Seigaku, but my Rikkai squee-phases tend to be short-lived. D:

D:

I'll keep working on it. XD

[identity profile] muzivitch.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me glad that I'm a rival team fangirl. Although, honestly, Shitenhouji seems to attract a lot of crap too.

Is it bad that I've mostly given up on reading fanfic if I don't know the writer?

[identity profile] giving-ground.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably, but I tend to be much the same......... *feels sort of bad*

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I just follow the rec trails...

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad, it's not just the TezuFuji ship that the stupids have ruined. It's pretty much any ship. There are so few writers that I'll even dare to read these days.

And there's no way they can write that tripe and 'love writing'. They're trying to reel in other fantards to flail with and that's about it. :|

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So. Very. True. Most fics for any of the ships I read are a nightmare.

It's not even fun to flail anymore because flailing with morons isn't fun in the slightest.

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even visit the comms anymore. I feel like I've fallen into the ff.net pit. ;__;

Ugh, no kidding. So many of the people I liked fanflailing with have moved onto to fandoms that I'm not interested in.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Join us in our fandom cleansing! IT WILL BURN LIKE THE ff.net PIT OF HELL!

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*brings holy water* Plus, I've always wanted to wear a clergy stole.

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to stay in fandom. I loved Zukafuji something fierce...but I just can't maintain an active interest in utter dredge. If people write that much worse than me, they fucking suck.

Yeah. Most of my favourite writers are gone and I'm not too keen on the ones that were left behind. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's characterization thing. I can't stand how they write my babies. Not in the least. Not how they do the gay for only you cliche or how everyone cries or how Fuji is some freaking pussy. *stops ranting or she'll never stop*

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hate it when they turn them into women. Fuji - to say nothing of Tezuka - is not a girl. He's prettier than most, but he's still a DOOD. Poor Eiji and Fuji - the eternal fandom girls. -__-

Ahaha, it's not mean at all - it's just the truth. :D It took me a while to develop an affinity for Tezuka/Fuji, mainly because so few people take the time to write them well. Same for Golden Pair (which I love) - you either get Eiji-the-wonder-uke or Oishi-the-wife-beater.

Uh huh. I'm only gay for you. Blah.

*understands*

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to reply, but *points up* what Leila said. XD

[identity profile] pixxers.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :(

*makes up emo poem about fandom being an island*

[identity profile] semishade (from livejournal.com) 2008-10-21 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I hardly ever read fic these days, although I have been known to go Weiß/Ken hunting when the moon is full. Quality is one reason - although I've happily read bad stuff in the past so I suspect it's more a case of "same old same old". Lack of knowledge/interest in the series or pairings people write about these days is a probably the main reason.

I don't think my writing has improved at all over the past 3 years but it's certainly not because of ego-stroking by hordes of fans!

::off to Birmingham::

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Lack of knowledge and... lack of reading good quality things and learning from them, I think. It really does feel like they don't read books, or if they do, they read crap ones. And the ego-stroking is like ff.net has invaded LJ.

You've probably written enough to have settled with a particular style!

[identity profile] giving-ground.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly enough I think people are actually rather LESS ego-stroking on ffnet.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
.......we should invade ffnet instead? Nobody'd expect us!

[identity profile] shiroibara.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition ffnet invasion!

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
XDDDDDDDDD I was expecting Liz might reply with that, but hey! Hana ♥

Hana, ZukaFuji is being ruined.;;

I have gasoline. Want to perform a fandom cleansing? 8D

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oil prices coming down. WE CAN HAVE LOTS OF GASOLINE! \o/

We need to give our movement a name.

[identity profile] shiroibara.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I BOUGHT GASOLINE FOR $2.29/GAL! WE CAN BURN LOTS AND LOTS OF INFIDELS FOR A LOW EVERYDAY PRICE!

Hmmm, we need a really good name. I must think on this.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
BURNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

At this sort of time, we need Unni and her punny skills!

[identity profile] shiroibara.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE

We do!! I'm certain she would want to be in on the burning of fandom. It is far too overgrown. We must raze it to ashes so that only the strong will survive!

[identity profile] giving-ground.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A spanking cleansing! A cleansing! XD

ext_73116: (I see you.)

[identity profile] dshae47.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had arguments with people regarding that whole popularity issue before... Apparently, some people believe the point of writing fic is to be read, regardless of the writing itself (because writing fanfic is not real writing). I still can't figure it out, but... I guess if you're not aware that you're not perfect, how could you possibly improve? And why would you even want to, when people already fangirl you all that much and that's the whole point of fic writing? XD

Agreeing with most everyone up there! I do read random people's Rikkai sometimes (I was never into Tezuka/Fuji myself), but somehow or other, even in exchanges, I always end up liking stuff written by the same writers, lol. It's... a little disturbing.

HAHAHAH!!! That "this fic deserves a lot more comments/love than it's getting" phrase is PRICELESS. Thumbs up! Good job!

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Some people just don't get it. Film/book reviews in magazines and newspapers don't say things like that because that doesn't work. And even when friends rec things to each other in RL, they would say, "go watch this, it's great" rather than "go watch this because it deserves more love."

[identity profile] uminohikari.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just ZukaFuji, all tenipuri fics have gone downhill V.V It's really sad.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
For non-Seigaku fics, I feel it's less of a case? I hear a lot of Hyoutei stuff is good, and I do like a lot of Rikkai stuff. There's just... more people writing now, so the percentage of good stuff might have gone down. XD But the actual amount is still there!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_pratz_/ 2008-10-21 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I don't wonder why my relationships with Zukafuji drop cold like a dead fish. -__-

[identity profile] thousandbirds.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I want to love them, but....

[identity profile] themirtle.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
ZukaFuji seems to share the unfortunate fate of Harry/Draco in HP fandom - the ship is so popular and obvious that it appeals to any high school student who knows how to type. Some of them (vast majority I'm afraid) dont even read the books on their school-program list, but yet they feel obliged to let the world know their view of the TRUE LOVE STORY. between two boys who turn into girls but it doesnt bother the author a tiny bit. When I started searching the fandom for fics I noticed that straight away (well, I am still new here). There are some totally horrible SanaYuki too but I guess due to a generally smaller population of supporters those bad ones dont do much harm to a ship.

It is really hard to preserve love for the pairing in such a case. but I hold on ))) still love both HarryDraco and ZukaFuji cos I KNOW there are really good fics/authors that reflect my own perception and emotions about the pair.

tough times though, yeah. must be strong ))))

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
You're probably right! I didn't think about that... too obvious, the first pair a lot of people see... in that way I'm glad that Sanada and Yukimura don't come into the series until quite late, because they're obvious too and a lot of people would've latched onto them.

Just have to... keep rereading the old fics, because none of what's come out recently (by the general fandom, not the awesome people on my flist) is even worth reading!

[identity profile] crypticmadness.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
):
It's true; so much of the quality is gone from TezuFuji. D:
And for some reason, most of the D1 fics I've read are really good. >________>

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
D1 seems to buck the trend, but that's not strange - they're D1! XDDD

I quite enjoy the Rikkai and Higa fics when I see them. Some Rikka ones are a bit iffy, but every now and then there's a good one and even the not-so-good ones have a lot of potential. In comparison, the Seigaku fics... maybe I'm just expecting too much?

I wonder, maybe because Seigaku's there since the beginning, anyone who's read/watched a bit of the series might start writing them. But the other schools that come in later require more "dedication" from fans... they have to keep watching/reading to get to those schools, and by that time those fans have a much better understanding of the series and characters. They probably also have a longer attention span. >>
