This is what I don't understand: why do people make their sharing journals as PERSONAL journals rather than communities?

This doesn't matter, of course, if the LJ is open. I can use the track function to find out when there is an update, or just pop-over every now and then to check. But if it's "comment here and I'll add you so that you can see scans", then I have a problem.

With [livejournal.com profile] todokanai, I don't mind at all, because I know who owns it and that person is on my flist anyway. But I don't want to have to add a LJ of a random person to my flist just to see scans - the person with that login can see my flocked entries! Why couldn't those people make sharing communities instead, and then giving posting permission to only the comm owner? And then posts can be viewable by members only. They could even set it to "membership requires approval" if they like.

Maybe I'll make a journal, post a few fake entries with it, use it to join some random fandom comms, then use it to friend those LJs. Hmph.

My reasons for locking my scan journal are essentially the same as Leah's, not to mention how ban-happy LJ has been getting for ON NOES PORN. That, and hotlink protection doesn't work if it's a community (you have to allow *all* communities since it won't let you do say "community.livejournal.com/blahblahblah". If you can change make it work otherwise, I dunno how.).

...I hear Akaya prowling.

Actually, Nori boo, you can specify the directory. .^^ That's what I do for my img hosting.

Use this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?community.livejournal.com/commname(/)?.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png)$ - [F,NC]

Replace "commname," of course.

You can do this, but I always find that there are a whole bunch of people who seem to have problems with it, and by problems I mean they end up being not able to see any images, even though they should be able to.

It ended up being too much of a horrible hassle for me to try fiddling with scripts every other day.

Really? .htaccess is really picky though so if you don't get it exactly right, it won't work. No one's had a problem so far for me so I guess I'm lucky. .^^;
