Layout help!

S2 is doing my head in. I can't find a ready-made one that does what I want and I can't for the life of me code one.

What I want to do is this. It's really that simple. The calendars and links I prefer to still be on white background, maybe with a dotted line box around them, but it doesn't matter much. Entries are black or grey writing on white. Each entry with a dotted line box around it. The header would be an image map.

With the header image, though, all the S2 codes I've seen has to have it as a non-repeating background image in the CSS, and I don't know how to make something in CSS into a map. That, and the shadow of the central "strip" - if the header is already a background image, I can't get a second, vertically repeating background image into the code... *fails* And S2 generally is a gobbledygook to me.

Would anyone be able to help by pointing me to some codes, please?

[livejournal.com profile] refuted wrote a great S2 template here, with background separate to header in the coding so that you can use both at once. It's the one I used for my current layout, so it is very customisable.

Image mapping is something I've never mastered, unfortunately, but I can recommend [livejournal.com profile] freelayouts if you're not familiar with it. There's lots of S2 layouts on there and I often look at people's coding to see how they do what they do.

Thanks! I'll give it a go. I know how to make maps in ordinary HTML, but have no idea how it works when the image url is part of the CCS. Maybe google can tell me something...
