rant A and rant B

[livejournal.com profile] tenipuri_fusion is different from most RPs that you actually have to follow the anime. We announce time periods, which parts of the anime will be covered in each period, and RPers need to follow that. It is probably more for those who likes to do character building and relationships slowly.

It's more restrictive than most RPs. Gah, you can't just start an orgy, of course. But it does have its merits.

I don't mind if you're involved in other RPs as well. I also don't mind when someone doesn't like the format and decides to pull out, because if you aren't having fun, then there's no point. Hell, you don't need to give a reason to pull out. But don't fucking lie to me with your eyes open and say you don't have the bloody time for RP coz of school/work/life when you've signed up to other RPs too recently. I'm not stupid, I'm not blind, contrary to what you believe.

I saw several comms that say "under-18s can't join, only members can post, and everyone are welcomed to watch. If you're under 18 then don't let us find out". Puzzles me to no end. Reasons?

Mods check new member's personal LJs to find age. They don't just read the info, they troll through entries to see if new member is a minor. Not that this is illegal or anything, online journals are public, but it's just... gah.

If I'm under 18, then don't let you find out? So if you didn't find out, does that relieve you of legal responsibilities? No, duh. And of course anyone can watch the comm, you can't prevent a comm from being f-listed, but you don't ask your members to lock their NC-17 posts. Which means you're providing a place for minors to read adult material anyway. The only thing "under-18s can't join, member-posting only" accomplishes is that under-18s can't post adult material. That doesn't really change anything.

Hello, am I missing something here? Or are those mods missing the point?

I agree with rant A and I agree with rant B

But on top of that, I adore you to bits *snugglehugglewugglewooooos*

Just thought I'd add that

I think you're missing the point.

By law, a moderator might be responsible for having a minor member being on a list if said minor's parents find that out... and since lots of comms (and MLs) are US-based where the law is ridiculous and people don't take their own responsibilities for 1- raising their kids and 2- the net is not your babysitter, well, rules must be created.

It's impossible to start asking PROOF of age (what, you just end up scanning your mom's birth certificate and ship it to the mods... the point?) so what they do is COVER THEIR LITTLE ASSES...

By at least publically ANNOUNCING that minors are not allowed. So if a minor joins DESPITE the warning, then the moderator can defend him/herself against irate parent by saying WE HAVE A RULE... YOUR CHILD disobeyed... hold him/her responsible for breaking the rules, not us!

And the "if you are a minor, don't tell us?" thing? I've seen STUPID CLUELESS minors joining a list and then bragging they are minors... Since adults can be held responsible for delinquency of minors, guess how well it goes? So it's like if you are a minor and dishonest and disrespectful enough of the other members (who can get in shit because of your little stunts) to join a 18+ list, at least STFU!

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2004-05-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But I mean... if that's what they're doing, shouldn't they request their members to lock all NC-17 posts? Because they're practically providing a place for minors to read adult material.

When they've stated this is a 18+ list, minors not allowed to join, they've protected themselves legally already. The only message I get from "if you are a minor, don't tell us" is "fine, go and join if you're a minor, just don't let us find out". Which isn't to do with legal issues, but practically suggesting to under-18s that they really can join if they pretend to be adults...

NO.

You put a disclaimer... ONLY adults are allowed.

If minors disobey the rules, why should adults be forced to follow strict guidelines in a community that is FOR adults.

You can join many Yahoo MLs even though they have a 18+ disclaimer... and once you're in? you see everything.

The net is not the babysitter. They put a disclaimer to protect themselves in the eyes of the law. They don't have to bug their adult members because selfish kids want to flaunt the rules.

And btw? Most kids joining MLs & comms are usually found out. They are not that intelligent and will do/say something at some point that will reveal the truth. The ones that are able to STFU and fool the mods/members? Well, their parents will probably not be a problem anyway...

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2004-05-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So you mean, having a minor join an adult list is illegal (but mods can protect themselves by putting in a disclaimer), but providing a place that can be freely accessed by minors is not illegal? Coz I don't know the law.

And what I said about "if you are a minor, don't tell us" still... I understand they want to protect the comm's interests, but that line's like encouraging minors to join and lie about their age. (which is fine but... I just don't like it when people encourage other people to lie)

In some comms they word it "don't let us find out" (as in my original post). If they're already protected by the disclaimer, why would the mods want to troll through personal LJs of every new member to work out if they're 18 yet? They kick members they suspect to be under-18, even when they haven't said a thing on the comm. I mean, I do salute the mods for having the patience to do this... but I don't see the point.

Since I don't mod lists 18+; I've not had to face this problem and I don't know (nor do I care, honestly) about all the reasoning behind their wordings.

One thing I can tell you, if a mod stalk the members she suspects of being under 18+, believe me, she probably has a reason or no life ^_~
