IMPORTANT LIEK WHOA

Dear friends

Just to remind you guys, if there are things you want to tell me but don't want the world to know, do NOT leave a comment and then delete/screen it. That trick won't work anymore because there can be people using the new "track" LJ function and they'd get your comment in an email.

Remember this, okay?

There's a track function now?!

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you'll see it if you're using a default layout (prolly S2). That's how I kept track of all the new comments at the tenimyu comm post. And you can manage your subscriptions to posts here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/subscriptions/

[identity profile] evaporate.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It shows up as "not ready" for me -- possibly because you're a permanent user? I read somewhere that new features are in testing stages right now, so they're exclusive to users with permanent accounts.

Will keep that in mind, though, meep. Thanks for the heads up!

[identity profile] sesame-seed.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
...That didn't even occur to me. Oh man. Thanks for pointing it out.

[identity profile] potter.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, where's my privacy?

Seriously, what? Just what? :o

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's sort of a useful function when you wanna keep track of other people's posts or community posts, and see what replies they get. I suppose the creators assume whatever that needs to be said in private, people would use friends lock for it... but I have friends who suddenly have something to say and just say it in a post and then delete the comment, which now is no longer a safe option...

I wonder if there's a way to turn off "track" for a journal so that nobody can track it :O

[identity profile] potter.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really freaked out by that. I mean, I understand it in theory but it can be abused so easily. :o I'm friends only so I presume nothing said on my journal would be a problem, but...seriously, that's ill-thought-out. I can't access the subscriptions link you posted in an earlier comment (says it isn't ready :s) but I'll keep an eye on this...

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
:O I never have problems using that link. But then again, I've only been looking at it since about a few days ago ^^"

[identity profile] sesame-seed.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's only for permanent account holders so far, I believe. ^^"

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
oooo! So for now, we have superior powahs of spying on people! O_O!!!

[identity profile] sesame-seed.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
*dies*

I knew that money wasn't spent for nothing!

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Um. That's a bit of uncomfortable and unecessary invasion of someone's privacy.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Just have to remind ourselves to lock what needs to be kept under lock...

[identity profile] nelladarren.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Privacy"?! This is a journal where you make things PUBLIC unless you mark them "friends only" - that's the whole sense behind LJ...!

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's "...", but I agree. With the way people surf the net these days, what you say in public may be read by more people than you can ever imagine. The safest choice is to keep things under appropriate locks.

[identity profile] reddwarfer.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But the internets don't do the automatic spacing for my elipses. :(

True.

It's just disconcerting to know that any post could have that, even if it is in "public", it feels different than if someone went to your journal to read what was said. It's one thing to know something, it's another "know" it. So, I may know people read my journal, but I'd still feel odd "knowing" that someone could have all comments sent to the in-box for a post.

[identity profile] eames.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
......

That only works for public posts, though, yes?

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think it works as long as you can see the post, so I can track your friends-only posts, for example.

I just sent a question to support asking "how about post that screens all comments". I hope they'll tell me it won't work for those posts. In any case, the function's still in testing stages, so I won't trust it...

[identity profile] eames.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's kinda scary.

But you could only do that because you're on my flist, yeah?

Someone who wasn't couldn't do it, because my posts are locked against them anyway?

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think. Actually, I'm gonna do a few experiments and see how far it works...

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I just made a private post using an RP journal, noted the post ID and tried to track it by putting that ID into the tracking link... doesn't work. So at least it can't track private posts. So I suppose it can't track posts locked against the person, as well...

[identity profile] ashesto.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
O___o What exactly is this new "track" function supposed to do?

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
it's in testing stage so it's a permanent account only feature for now. It allows you to be alerted to comments to a post, even if the post isn't your own or is a comm post.

[identity profile] ashesto.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, huh. I can see how that might be useful for a comm post, but on personal journals? Eh, not so much.

[identity profile] yuki-scorpio.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
A few of my friends often post about controversal or interesting topics that generate quite a discussion, so it's useful in that sense. But yeah.

Still creepy. @_@;

[identity profile] sinistera.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
There's a track LJ fuction? o_____o;;

[identity profile] mushrooms.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
NOES. BUT HOW WILL I EVER TELL YOU THAT I LOVE YOU NOW? Seeing as how it's all forbidden and such. 8D

refertoiconpls.

[identity profile] miiol.livejournal.com 2006-08-26 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I guess things like that are best left to text or e-mail now? Hahah, that's totally geared against people with short attention span!!

Thanks for the heads up!

[identity profile] ele5.livejournal.com 2006-08-28 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that there are situations in which that's useful, but still... It feels like "stalk LJ function" instead of "track LJ function".

I hope the final form will be something that allows people to deny tracking their journals. Not that I would seriously worry that someone would want to track my journal. Or perhaps I would worry for them.
