Just to remind you guys, if there are things you want to tell me but don't want the world to know, do NOT leave a comment and then delete/screen it. That trick won't work anymore because there can be people using the new "track" LJ function and they'd get your comment in an email.

There's a track function now?!

Yeah, you'll see it if you're using a default layout (prolly S2). That's how I kept track of all the new comments at the tenimyu comm post. And you can manage your subscriptions to posts here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/subscriptions/

It shows up as "not ready" for me -- possibly because you're a permanent user? I read somewhere that new features are in testing stages right now, so they're exclusive to users with permanent accounts.

Will keep that in mind, though, meep. Thanks for the heads up!

It's sort of a useful function when you wanna keep track of other people's posts or community posts, and see what replies they get. I suppose the creators assume whatever that needs to be said in private, people would use friends lock for it... but I have friends who suddenly have something to say and just say it in a post and then delete the comment, which now is no longer a safe option...

I wonder if there's a way to turn off "track" for a journal so that nobody can track it :O

I'm really freaked out by that. I mean, I understand it in theory but it can be abused so easily. :o I'm friends only so I presume nothing said on my journal would be a problem, but...seriously, that's ill-thought-out. I can't access the subscriptions link you posted in an earlier comment (says it isn't ready :s) but I'll keep an eye on this...

Um. That's a bit of uncomfortable and unecessary invasion of someone's privacy.

Just have to remind ourselves to lock what needs to be kept under lock...

"Privacy"?! This is a journal where you make things PUBLIC unless you mark them "friends only" - that's the whole sense behind LJ...!

It's "...", but I agree. With the way people surf the net these days, what you say in public may be read by more people than you can ever imagine. The safest choice is to keep things under appropriate locks.

But the internets don't do the automatic spacing for my elipses. :(

It's just disconcerting to know that any post could have that, even if it is in "public", it feels different than if someone went to your journal to read what was said. It's one thing to know something, it's another "know" it. So, I may know people read my journal, but I'd still feel odd "knowing" that someone could have all comments sent to the in-box for a post.

I think it works as long as you can see the post, so I can track your friends-only posts, for example.

I just sent a question to support asking "how about post that screens all comments". I hope they'll tell me it won't work for those posts. In any case, the function's still in testing stages, so I won't trust it...

Yeah, I think. Actually, I'm gonna do a few experiments and see how far it works...

I just made a private post using an RP journal, noted the post ID and tried to track it by putting that ID into the tracking link... doesn't work. So at least it can't track private posts. So I suppose it can't track posts locked against the person, as well...

it's in testing stage so it's a permanent account only feature for now. It allows you to be alerted to comments to a post, even if the post isn't your own or is a comm post.

Wow, huh. I can see how that might be useful for a comm post, but on personal journals? Eh, not so much.

A few of my friends often post about controversal or interesting topics that generate quite a discussion, so it's useful in that sense. But yeah.

I understand that there are situations in which that's useful, but still... It feels like "stalk LJ function" instead of "track LJ function".

I hope the final form will be something that allows people to deny tracking their journals. Not that I would seriously worry that someone would want to track my journal. Or perhaps I would worry for them.
