What does it mean?

Anou...

What does it mean when someone is described as "beautiful and terrible"? Was reading LotR and Tolkien used it often. "Great and terrible" and such. I guess in Tolkien's time the word "terrible" had another meaning to it? ^^"

Awesome was okay to me because it has the "awe" bit in it, so it sort of makes sense... "terrible" though... I could only associate it with "terrifying" so I had no idea what it could be. ^^"

Thanks~! =D

terrible is kinda unseen power and stuff isn't it.

something negative, destructive.....

yah, deriving it from terror would be a good idea~

Remember that scene near the end of the Fellowship of the Ring movie in which Galadrial is tempted by the Ring? "Beautiful and terrible" in a nutshell. Though actually that screencap is probably more towards the terrible side. ^_^;;
