2012 Olympics

I really want London to win.

I'm not much of a sports fan. When I watch the Olympics, I usually just go for the opening/closing ceremonies, the gymnastics, and the mens swimming. But I want to see the games in London because East London and the rest of the capital would benefit from the urban regeneration work. And even though David Beckham's speech about bringing the games to the children is pretty cheesy, it's true. Sports can inspire children so much. Kids stray into crime and other nasty things because they have nobody to look up to and nothing to do all day. Especially in the East London, where there are so many ASBO kids, having world class atheletes and top sporting facilities, I just think it's a good thing. Giving out ASBOs and locking them up isn't the long term solution, after all. What we need to give is inspiration.

The thing is, those are exactly the same arguments every country that tries to get the Olympics use (including mine). It would be great for London, yes, but it would be great for a bazillion and nine other cities in the world too. And in the end, even if this is the humanly right kind of thinking, it's not the one that determines where the Olympics go - they go to the place with the most financial conditions of building huge stadiums and holding big ceremonies, which are not necessarily the countries that most need the benefits tourism and media exposition would bring (just see the countries that held the Olympics in the past editions, they all earned loads of profit on the games, but none of them actually needed those profits for the wellfare of the people, while other countries who could really use that money are denied because they can't have enough of a fancy high-tech event).

Anyway. What I mean is, London does have a big big chance of winning, but if it wins, it's not going to be for those good, honest reasons, it's going to be by influential lobby of people with money and power. :\

Oh, I know that. I totally agree. But it doesn't stop me from wanting the games here~

Dude, if you went to the gymnastic events I'd totally be staring at the audience all the time just for the pleasure of squealing and pointing to TV and yelling PEZ!!!!!! THAT'S MY FRIEND PEZ, SEE? MY FRIEND, NOT YOURS. HI PEZ!!!11!11!

And you could wave at the cameras just to make me feel special too. >.>

I in no way implied that LJ was the only entity that loves you. :p But it means it doesn't swallow your letters randomly. ♥

Well. London is close by so anyone who wants to see the games can go, but if it's not within Paris, life will actually be bearable here during the games. >_>

I know it would be good for whatever economic reasons, but I'd still rather it happens somewhere else. And Dimmeh raises good points, too. *nods*
