LJ accessibility

Yo, those of us who have been having the "page cannot be found" problem (ie refresh 5million times before anything loads) with LJ, may not be able to access LJ at all now.

You are using Norton Internet Security, right? Yes, I've realised one thing.

*nods* yup. NIS is not allowing LJ through now, and I can't configure it to let it through. I have filed a support request, and another person already has as well, about this.

If you have the same problem, please somehow go to http://www.livejournal.com/support/submit.bml and submit a support request (yeah, you'll have to disable Norton to do that). If there are only one or two complaints they'll just say it's our problem. But if there are enough cries for help they can't ignore us.

...actually, I use NIS as well as another firewall and additional virus scanner, and I never had any problems with it. The few times that the page doesn't load for me is during high server time, or when they're mucking around with their servers, but that's when the site is down for anybody.

For that matter, there are settings in NIS in which you can specify 'allowed' sites. You can do the same in your IE/otherbrowser settings.

I don't think bombarding the LJ abuse team with requests is going to work. This isn't their fault. It IS our problem. LJ is hardly responsible for making sure their site works with settings end-users manage on their own computers.

ok, fine. if it really IS our fault, would you be so kind and generous as to tell the people who have NIS and this problem on fixing it?

Rather than blaming people and... saying mean stuff... err..
anyways....
yeah. please show us the light and tell us what to do!

Blaming people and saying mean stuff? It was hardly my intention to blame anybody. Fact is, NIS has to be configured, or it will muck up sites.

Here. (http://www.mdcroundhouse.com/general/Security.htm)

oh. sorry about that. when I read it, it seemed like you were blaming people and such.
Anyways, although I thank you for that website....
That still doesn't solve anything.

Same problem.

I have asked friends on IM who have been getting the "page cannot be found" problem recently, and cannot go into LJ at all right now, and we all can access LJ after disabling NIS 2003.

I have gone into NIS and added LJ to trusted sites, still nothing happens. I've done a lot of other settings changes too. I've gone into "options" and set it to permit LJ everything too and I still can't access. I've also tried disabling NIS' different features one by one...

If you go look into the older support requests, you'll see that many people have been getting the "page cannot be found" problem, and it can happen at any time. We have to refresh 10+ times (no exaggeration) to get it to load. Now it doesn't load at all. Their answer is "heavy server load" each time, but when I access from uni I never get that problem, and neither do my friends who access LJ at work.

I think we crossed wires here at some point.

If NIS is indeed the source of your problems, and if the site works after you shut the program down, why go ahead and complain to LJ that their site won't work because of your program? I'm not saying that NIS is without fault. It works perfectly for me. I never had any problems with it, regardless of what site I accesssed, regardless of what kind of scripts these site used, and I am firewalled into oblivion.

I'm not telling you to not use the complain form. I simply don't see the merit of complaining to LJ about how NIS doesn't work with LJ. It works for a lot of other people I know, myself included. LJ isn't responsible for making sure their site works for people who have programs on their computers that may or may not prevent them from correctly viewing or accessing a site. What are they supposed to do? Complain to Norton that their program is giving them trouble?

have you tried turning parental control off altogether? I never had it on, and though I've still had trouble with LJ (I think fifteen refreshes is my record so far) eventually I get into the page I want.
