I was always one of those who thought he was just a freak, which I think in part was due to my automatic suspicion (even as a child!) of anyone or anything that's super-popular. But since his death I've read a lot more about him and I'm sorry I ever felt that way. I think it's undeniable he was eccentric and misunderstood, but he must've had such a terrible life and I dunno, it seems like he was such a gentle person that he didn't know how to deal with it. I feel really sorry for him, cos I now think he really did believe all these ideals about making the world a better place.
