Because, speaking as an official, I have seen a LOT of powerpoint presentations over the years and these days am much more impressed by people who can just tell me in words what they're doing (and answer questions intelligently). Interesting graphics which enable you to "visualise" are a different ballgame but seldom seen - the best powerpoint I ever saw had a plain background, no text and 4 of those little status bar thingies that show how quickly you are connecting to the Internet. Each represented a different connection type (dial up, ISDN2, ADSL, broadband). The presenter told us which was which, launched them all simultaneously to connect a website - and then completely ignored them while he was talking. The dialup of course was still crawling across the screen when he finished. It was so effective I went straight home afterwards and looked for a broadband package to sign up to.
It's amazing how many people who are theoretically "shrug" about politicians are all over them like a rash in person. It's the fame/power thing.
